Cyclone Sitrang: Death toll now 11 as two more die in Pabna

At least 11 people have died in seven districts of the country due to the impact of Cyclone Sitrang yesterday (October 24, 2022).

Among the deceased, three were in Cumilla, two in Bhola, two in Sirajganj and one each in Shariatpur, Barguna, Narail, and Dhaka.

In Cumilla, a man, his wife and their infant daughter were killed when a tree fell on their house at Hesakhal Paschim Para in Nangalkot upazila around 9pm yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Nezam Uddin (30), Sathi Akhter (25), and Liza Akhter (4).

Nangalkot Upazila Health Officer Dr Devdas Dey confirmed the incident to our Cumilla correspondent.

Quoting Bhola's Char Fasson Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Noman, our Barishal correspondent reported that two people were killed in the upazila after a tree fell on them.

The deceased were identified as Bibi Khadija (80) and Monir Hossain (30).

Out Patuakhali correspondent reported that centenarian Amena Begum was killed in Burir Char area of Barguna Sadar upazila.

Confirming the death, local UP chairman Advocate Md Humayun Kabir said, "100-year-old Amena Begum died on the spot when a tree fell on her house around 8pm."

Out Khulna correspondent reported that a woman was killed when a branch of a tree fell on her in Lohagara upazila in Narail around 12 noon yesterday. The deceased was identified as Morzina Begum (32).

In Shariatpur, Safia Khatun (65) was killed when a branch of a tree fell on her in Sidarchar village in Jajira upazila of the district. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamrul Hasan Sohel confirmed the matter to our local correspondent.

Quoting Mosaddek Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West Police Station in Sirajganj, our Pabna correspondent reported that Ayesha Siddika (30) and her son Arafat (3), drowned in a canal in Mohanpur area around 8pm.

Mentioning that Ayesha was returning home from work, the OC said, "Arafat died on the spot and Ayesha died at Sirajganj General Hospital."

Quoting Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, our correspondent said that a rickshaw puller was killed when a wall collapsed in the capital's Hazaribagh area due to stormy weather.

Efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the deceased, he added.
