Around 4,000 goods-laden trucks were stranded at the Indian land port of Petrapole due to inadequate space at Benapole land port in Bangladesh.

Mafizur Rahman Sajan, president of Benapole C&F Agents' Association, said the trucks have been increasing day upon day due to the shortage of space at Benapole.

Businessmen have pressed home their demand to the authorities in this regard on many occasions but it has gone in vain, he told our Benapole correspondent.

According to authorities, the situation occurred as the port was closed for many days following the coronavirus outbreak.

The land port was also closed for 10 days during the Eid-ul-Azha vacation, when no delivery of goods took place inside Bangladesh, the authorities said.

Benapole Land Port Deputy Director (Traffic) Mamun Kabir Tarafder said the two largest open yards have already been set up to solve the problem.

Besides, there is another 25 acres of land at the port where the authorities would construct a Cargo Vehicle Terminal, the official said.
