Murder accused arrested
Unb, Chuadanga

Police arrested an absconding accused from Aliara Bazar area in Kachua upazila on Saturday. The arrestee is Manik, 35, son of late Mafiz Uddin of Aliara village. Alamgir Hossain Majumdar, officer in-charge of Kachua Police Station, said, being informed, a team of the police raided the area and arrested Manik, a charge-sheeted absconding accused in a case filed for killing Lutfar Rahman, an army man. The arrestee was wanted in several cases filed with the police station, the OC added.

Jewellery shop looted
Unb, Natore

Armed robbers looted gold ornaments and cash from a jewellery shop at Biharkole Bazar in Bagatipara upazila early Saturday. Police said, a gang entered 'Alongkar Jewellers' around 3:30am and took the two night guards-- Abdul Mannan and Ahsan Ali hostage at gunpoint. Later, they looted many gold ornaments and Tk 1.5 lakh cash from the shop. Police detained the two night guards for interrogation.

College girl 'commits suicide'

A college girl allegedly committed suicide over love affairs at Uzial-Paikpara village under Taraganj upazila early yesterday. The dead is Aktar Sweety, 18, a first year student at Dangirhat School and College and daughter of Shukaru Mian of the village. Family sources said Sweety had developed a relationship with Hasanur Rahman, 22, a student of Taraganj Degree College and son of Sufian Rahman of Menanagar village. On Friday night, Hasanur secretly married another girl. Hearing the news, Sweety hanged herself from the ceiling of her room. The body was sent to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Md Mosabberul Haque, officer in-charge of Taraganj police station.

Jamaat activist held

Detectives arrested an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami from Sadar Hospital Road area in the town yesterday. The arrestee is Torikul Islam Nayan, 40, vice president of Chapainawabganj College Shikkhak Kallayan Samity and a resident of the area. Jasimuddin, officer in-charge of Sadar Model police station, said Nayan was an accused in 18 cases including for vandalising vehicles and attacking law enforcers. He remained absconding for long, said the OC.

Robbery at businessman's house

A gang of robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables from a house in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat early yesterday. The house owner Biswajit Saha, 43, a local businessman also sustained injuries during the incident. Abul Kalam Azad, officer in-charge of Akkelpur Police Station, quoting locals said, a gang of 20/25 armed robbers stormed into Bishwajit's house at Sonamukhi village around 1:30am, and took the family members hostage at gunpoint. Later, the gang looted 30 tolas of gold ornaments and case Tk 2 lakhs, by breaking a locker at his room, the OC said. Locals took Bishwajit, who received stab injuries while resisting the gang, to Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex.
