12 hurt in AL infighting

At least 12 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League at Katlagari Bazar in Shailakupa upaizla. Sagir Miah, officer in-charge of Shailakupa Police Station, said Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, a chairman of Sarutia union parishad, and Julfiker Kaisar Tipu, a former Chhatra League leader, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area. As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of both groups equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other at Katlagari Bazar around 9:30 am, leaving 12 people injured. On information, police fired 16 shots and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the warring groups. Imdad Hossain, sub-inspector of Shailakupa Police Station, and constable Mujibur Rahman, were also injured in the clash. They were taken to hospital.

 

 

Poachers held with deer skins

Law enforcers in a drive arrested four poachers along with eight deer skins from Amtoli village in Sadar upazila of Barguna district yesterday. The arrestees, Nasir Mollah, 38, Kamrul Islam, 24, Anamul Haque, 27, and Aynal Haque, 21, hailed from the same village in the upazila. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-8) from Patuakhali camp raided the village around 10:30am and arrested the four poachers along with the skins while they were waiting for boarding on a rickshaw-van to take the skins for selling those in the town, Fyzul Haque, a Rab official at a press conference said.

 

 

Peanut trader beaten dead

A peanut trader was beaten to death by a gang in Bhogpara village in Boda upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Zahirul Islam, 25, son of Arman Ali, a resident of the village. Police said some unidentified miscreants beat up Zahirul severally when he was on the way home on a motorcycle from Bomarhat Bazar around midnight. Later they dumped him with the motorcycle in a nearly paddy field. Locals rescued him after hearing his sound. Zahirul succumbed to his injuries while being taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
