Jamaat ameer arrested

Police on Tuesday arrested two top leaders of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami from their residences in Rahmannagar area of the town. They face two cases filed for vandalism, arson attacks and carrying out subversive activities. The arrestees are-- Abdul Haque Sarakr, 56, principal of Muruil Fazil Madrasa and Nayeb-e-ameer of the district unit and Advocate Riaz Uddin, 55, assistant secretary of the unit. AHM Foyzur Rahman, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the arrestees were produced before a court in the afternoon which sent them to jail.

Two journalists sent to jail

A court here on Tuesday sent two local journalists to jail after they were held on charge of demanding Tk one lakh illegal toll from a listed contractor of LGED. Aminul Islam, younger brother of Monirul Islam, a Class I contractor of the city filed the case with District and Session Judge's Court against Ziaul Hasan Palash, local correspondent of Channel-24 and Dainik Samakal, and Dulal Saha, correspondent of Jamuna TV on July 7. According to the case statement, they demanded Tk one lakh illegal toll from Monirul Islam threatening him to write a report about the alleged corruption he did during the construction work of some bridges and culvers in the district financed by the LGED in 2007-08 fiscal years.

“Punish Hridoy's killers”

Students of Government Ashek Mahmud College brought out a procession in the district town on Tuesday demanding capital punishment to the killers of Azharul Islam Hridoy, a B. Com first year student of the college, who was found murdered on August 17. According to the case statement, Hridoy along with his three friends-- Nishat, Konok, and Hasan-- went to the bank of Brahmaputtra River on two motorbikes on August 16, where the trio killed Hridoy and threw his body in the water. When Hridoy's family members put pressure on the trio to know about his whereabouts, they told them that he had drowned in the river. Police recovered the body on the following day. Faruk Ratan, father of the deceased filed a murder case with the Sadar police station on August 17, accusing Nishat, Konok and Hasan in this connection.

Man killed by siblings

A youth died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Tuesday after being stabbed allegedly by his two elder brothers at Kashdaha village in Sunderganj upazila. The deceased is Bablu Mia, 24. Locals said, there had been a long standing dispute between Bablu Mia and his two elder brothers Aminul Islam and Monu Mia over sharing of their the ancestral property. On Monday night, Aminul and Monu waylaid Bablu and stabbed him indiscriminately while he was returning home from Mia Bazaar. Hearing his screams, locals rescued him and rushed him to Sunderganj Upazila Health Complex. Meanwhile, as Bablu's body reached his village, aggrieved locals caught the two accused and handed them over to the police.
