Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, the senior most judge of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), has been appointed as the 21st chief justice of the country.

President Abdul Hamid made the appointment as per the article 95 (1) of the constitution, law secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Zahirul Haque Belal told The Daily Star.

The ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard today.

The appointment will come into effect on January 17, as present Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain will retire on January 16.

During his judgeship period in the Appellate Division, Justice Sinha delivered a number of landmark judgments including those on the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 5th and 13th amendments to the constitution.

Justice Sinha obtained LLB, enrolled as an advocate of the district court, Sylhet in 1974 and practiced in that court under the guidance of two reputed civil and criminal lawyers. He conducted sessions trial cases independently till end of 1977.

Then he enrolled as an advocate of the High Court and the Appellate Division in 1978 and 1990 respectively. During this period, he worked with eminent lawyer SR Pal as his junior till the date of elevation to the bench in 1999.

Justice Sinha elevated as judge of the High Court on October 24, 1999 and as judge of the Appellate Division on July 16, 2009.

He participated in the 3rd International Conference of the Chief Justices of the World as representative of chief justice of Bangladesh held at Lucknow, India in 2002, in the judicial training programme for the Senior Judges of Bangladesh held at Seoul, Korea in 2006 and judicial development programme in Korea, 2010.
