Six students suspended for ransacking registrar's office

Barisal University authorities yesterday suspended six students for beating up an assistant registrar and other staff while ransacking the university registrar's office on June 5.
The decision was made at a special syndicate meeting held at the university's liaison office in Kalabagan of the capital last evening.  
Earlier, on Sunday, the university authorities postponed all examinations till July 8, as students started boycotting semester final examinations demanding withdrawal of the case filed on June 7 by the BU authorities for ransacking the registrar's office.
The suspended students are Aqib Zaved Khan and Al-Mamun, 3rd-year students of marketing department; Reza Sharif and Enamul Huq Moni, 3rd-year students of management studies department; Saidul Islam, 3rd-year student of economics department; and Mithun Dey, 1st-year student of political science department, confirmed syndicate member Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman over the phone after the meeting.
 He said the students were suspended for violating academic discipline.
The authorities also formed a six-member probe committee led by syndicate member Prof Md Hanif to delve deep into the affairs.
The committee has been asked to submit a report within next four weeks, said Prof Akhtaruzzaman.
BU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Harunor Rashid said stern disciplinary action would be taken against the troublemakers on the basis of the probe committee report and replies of show-cause notices issued against the accused.
On June 7, BU Estate Officer Saiduzzaman lodged the case with Kotwali Police Station, accusing the above mentioned ones and 50 others unnamed.
The VC then said the case was filed after a 7-member probe committee submitted a report on June 6.
