The Fairness Cream Fiasco

Abhay Deol recently started a nationwide debate with celebrities like Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor for endorsing fairness creams. He is doing so through a series of Facebook posts, claiming that by endorsing fairness creams, the celebrities are promoting deep-rooted racism. According to him, the obsession for fair skin in Indians can be traced back to colonialism. While many applauded Deol's bravery and interest in this social issue, the same can't be said about the celebrities he made fun of through the Facebook posts. But amongst everything else, the weirdest tweet was by Uday Chopra, who stated, "What is this nonsense with fairness creams. If fairness creams are racist, then so is hair color. It's a personal choice!" Uday Chopra later became Twitter's laughing stock as many asked how he even became an actor.
