Classic Chuckles

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1990 – 1996)

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is an American TV sitcom that was initially aired from September 1990 to May 1996. The series had a total of six seasons and aired 148 episodes.

The show revolved around Will Smith as a fictionalized version of himself, who is a smart teenager from Philadelphia sent to stay with his rich uncle and aunt after getting into a fight in a basketball match. He has been sent to live in his uncle and aunt's Bel Air mansion. The selling point of the sitcom's plot is Smith's constant clashes in lifestyle with his relatives in Bel Air. This is where the show gets humorous as Smith's working class background ends up in conflict with the upper class, "bourgeois" background of his uncle and aunt in various humorous ways. The main characters in the series were Will Smith, as himself; James Avery, portraying Smith's uncle, Philip Banks; Janet Hubert-Whitten portraying Smith's aunt, Vivian Banks, and a bunch of other hilarious characters.

The sitcom received many nominations throughout its run that included Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards to name a few, of which, it won several awards such as the "Top TV Series" of ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards in 1994, and many other individual awards.

The show saw the then famous rapper Will Smith enter the humour scene with profound impact. It is with this sitcom that Smith catapulted his career towards stardom.

While there have been talks about a possible reboot of the popular sitcom, it is yet to be confirmed. The show is an outstanding sitcom to enjoy for people of all ages.
