Lessons from Disney villains that are still relevant today
Disney movies have been an integral part of our childhoods. It has taught us that the "good guy" will always emerge victorious. We walk away from the movies having witnessed wonderful tales about overcoming hurdles, jamming to catchy tunes, and developing a sense of attachment to the protagonists.
The villain, understandably, remains overlooked. While the moral of these stories has a lot to teach us, growing up means realising that our world doesn't consist of princesses and magical talking animals, and that we may be able to better sympathise with the villains. Here are lessons from some antagonists' that I find are increasingly applicable in today's world.
The Evil Queen
Vanity and narcissism? Doesn't ring a bell, does it? It is okay to seek validation in a mirror. You don't need a man. After all, the only person who can give you the world is yourself. Petitioning for The Evil Queen to be remembered as the "self-loving kween".
Ursula
In the age of technology, it is important to market yourself as The Person to go to for a particular problem. However, don't exploit your customers, lay it all out in the contract – if they can't comprehend the full extent of the terms and conditions, then it is solely their problem. Ursula is the ultimate girl boss sea-witch who perfectly encapsulates the entrepreneurial spirit.
Scar
Your circle matters. It is important to surround yourself with people who believe in you, so you can harness your true potential. A loyal band of followers can prove to be a great support system (as long as you treat them right, and they don't turn against you).
Maleficent
Did your elaborate curse… I mean plan, not work out? If you wish to channel Maleficent's aura, then you must always have a backup plan and save your best efforts for the grand finale. When the deadline is fast approaching, take a leaf out of the Mistress of Evil's book, and start plotting your next move. A move so magnificent, it may be compared to Maleficent's dragon form.
Captain Hook
Sometimes, all it takes is to get bitten by a crocodile to truly understand how badly you want to achieve something. When life throws curveballs, do not stop pursuing your dreams – until a bigger curveball is hurled your way.
Queen of Hearts
Cancel those who make you unhappy. It doesn't make sense to surround yourself with people who make you furious. As the Queen says, "Off with their heads." Although a beheading is not necessary, you could go ahead and unfollow, delete or block them from your social media.
Sometimes, we need to be the villains of our own stories.
