Ten years ago, I watched the movie Tron: Legacy and underwent a revelation. A pivotal scene in the movie focuses on stunning bike races, which awakened a love of the vehicle in me. From that point on, all I wanted was to ride the streets of Dhaka on a motorcycle.

However, the older I got, the more disillusioned I became with the entire concept. The abysmal state of road safety in our country, coupled with the fact that being a woman equates constant harassment, killed the dream pretty quickly. Sure, I still longed to be able to ride a bike on open roads, but I could never muster up the courage.

Nowadays, I see a lot of young adults, especially women, riding motorcycles in the city. I can't help but admire the sheer courage they must have to choose motorcycles as their preferred mode of transportation. The admiration comes with fear of their safety, as well as hopefulness. Maybe one day I'll join them.
