Ameen Raja
Ameen Raja is a London-based Bangladeshi singer, having his album, ‘Shunnota’, released on major streaming platforms, like ‘Spotify’ and ‘Apple Music’. In today’s interview, he talks about his inspiration for music and current projects.
What inspired you to start music?
I was inspired to start music through all the praises that I received from people. They used to tell me I could sing, so I decided to give it a try. I had to work on music in the gaps I had between my primary job. Living in London, scope for Bangla music is quite limited. Still, I tried to uphold our culture there.
How difficult is it to ingrain the Bangladeshi culture into the minds of the younger generation?
Children are like sponges — they can soak up a lot of new information and knowledge quickly. They learn from the adults; they will take up all the knowledge and teachings given to them.
How do you think those teachings should be given?
I see a lot of people forcing children to learn a certain thing. That method teaches nothing. In England, learning is made fun. If we want to teach children about our language and culture, we have to make it accessible to them in a format tailored for them, so that they feel enthusiastic.
How do you feel about the current state of our country?
People from my generation who have moved to England still feel the same attachment to Bangladesh. Now, even people who live in Bangladesh follow the Americans. But, those who live abroad have more love for our country. It may seem to us that our country hasn’t changed, but it has; it is a digital Bangladesh now.
How are you using music to express your national identity and culture?
I jointly use the combination of music and technology. I’m trying to work with individuals who have potential and passion because one can’t work in media without passion. We have a lot of talented people, so I’m trying to gather all the talents. I’m also trying to work with people who live abroad.
Are you currently doing anything related to music?
I have currently finished working on three Bangla songs. One of the songs has patriotic elements in it. They will be released and broadcasted on YouTube and radio. I would love it if those songs were featured on Bangladesh’s television channels. Aside from music, I’m an electrician, plumber, sound engineer, businessman, actor, and radio and television host.
What do you think is your best quality?
I consider myself a very hardworking individual. If I start something, I will finish it, no matter what. I’ll only start something new when I finish what I had left.
