Struggles of the Bollywood Obsessed

For those of us who are swept up in the world of Bollywood, we live for the dance numbers, the dramatic monologues and montages of flashback sequences accompanied by emotionally exploitative music. The harsh truth of reality is that life doesn't exactly pan out like a Bollywood movie. As Bollywood fans, we have to go through certain struggles everyday as we cope with life not being Bollywood-esque enough.

Why is the wind not blowing my saree?

Here I am all dressed up and the wind is blowing my hair but why is my saree not flowing? Should I face a different direction? Did I wear my saree wrong? Is there an optimal angle of standing which allows for maximum saree flowing? If the love of my life is to suddenly appear at this moment do I look dramatic enough?

You expect the music to pop in any moment

If I am having an emotional moment with anyone I am expecting the music to come in any moment. Where is the string quartet playing when I walk into campus looking like a boss? When I am giddy and taking two steps instead of one when are the background dancers appearing behind me? I have resorted now to playing the music in my mind. After an emotional conversation as I walk away slowly, tears in my eyes, the theme of Kal Ho Na Ho plays out clearly in my head.  No, I am not too dramatic.

Only you realise the significance of gorgeous foreign locations

As I am going through travel photos of friends and family, every gorgeous foreign location prompts the corresponding Bollywood scenes to start playing in my head. New York? Shah Rukh Khan dancing to Pretty Woman. London? Rohan arrives with a mission to reunite his family in K3G. Kashmir? Jordan arrives to find Heer on the day of her wedding in 'Rockstar'. How do the people who went to these places not realise the cinematic significance of where they're at?

Your wardrobe choices are always inspired

Eid? Cousin's wedding? Just getting a little dressed up for class? Somehow I find every look I put together inspired by some Bollywood scene or the other. Oversized jhumkas? Check.  Wrists full of funky coloured bangles? Check. Saree disguised as a lehenga or lehenga disguised as a saree? Check. As I am scrolling online, screenshots are being taken to accompany me in my next visit to the tailor's.

Accepting that we lack certain skills

I have to come to terms with the fact that I simply won't master tasks such as running in slow motion or magically syncing steps with 30 of my closest friends. Coincidence and chance probably won't keep re-shaping my destiny every 10 minutes and no long lost sibling of mine will miraculously reappear in my life making me question everything I know about this world.

That being said if at some point in my life I don't happen to run slow motion across a bridge to arrive at a wedding too late to stop the marriage then I shall be severely upset.
