HANGOUT

Columbus Coffee: New Attraction for Caffeine Connoisseurs

Columbus Coffee is a new coffee shop at Banani 11, Dhaka that serves coffee in disposable paper cups with lids on. They also write your names on the cups, and if they make a mistake with that, remember that it's more of a Starbucks tradition to deliberately misspell a customer's name.

Columbus Coffee serves Crimson Cup, which is a globally renowned caffeine brand. To an average caffeine lover, this coffee definitely does justice. You can divide the coffee shop's menu broadly into two: the hot beverages and the chilled ones. I tried latte the first time and cappuccino on my second visit. Both times they tasted a tad too bitter. I used three sachets of white sugar and it still wasn't enough. The coffee itself was aromatic and finely brewed. It, however, seemed a little less creamy than what you get at other such places.

I tasted the Frozen Mocha from my friend and it was amazing. I quite regret going for the hot drinks on both occasions but what's coffee without a little bit of burning the tongue? The Mocha drink however was on the pricey side, costing around Tk 400 with VAT.  The hot beverages range between Tk 150 and Tk 250. The brownie is a bit of a let down there – both in terms of portion and taste. The cheesecake's around Tk 300 and is pretty good. The sub sandwiches are decent – lots of filling inside – and range between Tk 250 and Tk 300.

One speciality of this place is that you have two choices for chilled drinks – on ice and frozen. This isn't something you get everywhere. As for me, I'd choose a frozen drink over anything served on ice. It's extremely convenient if you don't want to taste diluted ice water towards the end or have an issue of catching cold too soon. You can also get brown sugar and low calorie sugar besides white sugar. So when it comes to individual customer needs, these folks are doing a good job.

The cafe has a nice ambience with pretty lights and a selfie corner too. Located at one of the town's most happening zones, Columbus Coffee is good for an occasional dose of fancy caffeine. One downside is that if you like artistic additions to your coffee, then this might not be your place. You don't get cute teddies, tulips or hearts on top of your drink because there's no latte art but the disposable cups can be extremely handy if you want to grab some decent coffee in between work or classes.
