Themistocles was a non-aristocratic politician in ancient Athens. In the run up to the second Persian (present day Iran) invasion, he became the most prominent politician in Greece. In 483 BC, he convinced the Athenians to build a fleet of 200 triremes (warships); these would prove crucial in the conflict with Persia, the greatest superpower of that time. In fact, it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that it was Themistocles' strategies that helped Greece win that war. Over the years, however, Themistocles' perceived arrogance began to alienate him from the Athenians. In 471 BC, he was ostracised, and went into exile, entering the service of the Persian king, Artaxerxes I. Themistocles died in Persia.
