BUET organises exhibition at EMK Centre

An exhibition of the third year students of Architecture from BUET is going on at the EMK Centre, Dhanmondi. This exhibition is showcasing selected works from design studio project of an airport terminal building. Exhibits include drawings (plans, sections, elevations, and 3D views) and physical models of the terminal building.

Students of Department of Architecture, BUET were challenged to design an airport terminal building in three existing airport sites (Saidpur, Sylhet, and Cox's Bazar) of Bangladesh. The students have spent over a week studying different aspects of an airport terminal building (departure lounge, arrival concourse, HVAC, electrical system, firefighting system etc.). They have also visited the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport terminal building for a full day to understand how it works, what the essentials are, what the required scale of a terminal building is, how the luggage is handled, what the security requirements are etc.

The studio teachers are Prof. Dr. M. Zakiul Islam, Dr. Nayma Khan, Tasneem Tariq, Dr. Apurba Kumar Podder, Ahammad-Al-Muhaymin, and Meherul Kader Prince.

DIU signs MoU with BAU for academic and research co-operation

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and Daffodil International University (DIU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on February 11, 2019 at the office of the Vice Chancellor of BAU, Mymensingh. Md. Saiful Islam, Registrar, BAU and Prof. Eng. AKM Fazlul Hoque, Registrar, DIU signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institutes.

Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar, VC, BAU; Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, BOT, DIU; and other important personnel were present in the MoU signing ceremony.

According to the MoU, DIU and BAU will exchange their faculty members, researchers, staff members and students for conducting collaborating research projects, promoting agro-based activities particularly with BAU-GPC, promoting academic cooperation, cross-cultural education, lecture and organising symposium as mutually agreed manner.

FBS, DU holds grand finale of Freshmen Glory 2019

The grand finale of Freshmen Glory 2019, a business competition organised by Spartans' Communication Club exclusively for the newcomers of Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka (DU) took place in the Conference Hall of FBS on February 16, 2019. Chief guest Rashik Amin, Club Moderator Mohd. Anisul Islam and Shihab Mahmud were present to witness the final round of the event.

The business competition had 429 applicants in the initial round, among which only 24 remained to battle it out in the finale. The final round was all about group presentations based on solutions that they provided for a fully fleshed-out business case. Teams Giant Slayers, Dilettante, and Twinklers were picked out as second runner-up, first runner-up and champion respectively.

The judges and chief guests were thoroughly impressed with what all the finalist teams put up and praised their work ethic as well as presentation skills. The invitees concluded by commending Spartans Communication Club for continuing this club culture of doing something different for the freshmen and encouraged the club members to keep up with the good work.

SEU celebrates Pahela Falgun

Southeast University (SEU) celebrated Pahela Falgun (first day of Spring) on February 13, 2019 at SEU Seminar Hall, Main Building, Banani, Dhaka. The students of all departments of SEU took part in the celebration. They arranged a day-long "Spring Celebration" programme which included different cultural activities. They also arranged a cake festival programme on the occasion.

Prof. Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin, VC of SEU chaired the programme while eminent actress Rumana Rashid Ishita and actor FS Nayeem attended as special guests. Prof. Syed Fakhrul Hassan, Chairman of Textile Engineering Department delivered the welcome speech. M. Kamaluddin Chowdhury, Representative of BOT, SEU Trust also addressed in the programme. Among others, Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Taher, Maj. Gen. Kazi Fakhruddin Ahmed (Retd), Registrar, Chairmen, Directors, faculty members and officials of different departments were present in the programme.

NSU organises closing and certificate giving ceremony of training programme on scientific writing

The North South University (NSU) Library and The NSU Global Health Institute jointly organised a training programme on scientific writing recently. Twenty-four participants from different disciplines participated in the training programme. The training session came to an end by the closing session and certificate distribution ceremony.

At the beginning of the programme Dr. Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, University Librarian & Training-Coordinator delivered his welcome speech.

Prof. Dr. AKM Golam Rabbani, Department of Islamic History and Culture & Proctor, University of Dhaka was present as chief guest of the programme. Prof. Dr. Atiqul Islam, VC, NSU was also present at the session. Prof. Dr. Sharif Nurul Ahkam, Director, Graduate Studies, NSU shared his ideas about the training session while he was one of the resource persons of the programme.

The session was chaired by Dr. Ahmed Hossain, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health, NSU. The event ended with the vote of thanks and group photo session.

School of Life Sciences at IUB hosts Dr. Nazneen Aziz, CEO of Variant Genomics, USA

The School of Life Sciences at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) hosted Dr. Nazneen Aziz, President and CEO of Variant Genomics, Inc. for a seminar entitled "How Precision Medicine Helps Patient Care and Population Health" very recently in the IUB Auditorium. The talk focused on the scientific, economic, and social aspects of precision medicine, and provided an update on the current state of genomics technology and its use in precision medicine. Differences between individuals at the level of the genome can influence their susceptibility to various diseases, as well as affect how they respond to many types of drugs. As genomic data becomes cheaper and easier to acquire, it is increasingly feasible to examine patients' genomes while assessing treatment options, paving the way for personalised medicine.

Prof. Rita Yusuf, Dean, School of Life Sciences, IUB welcomed Dr. Aziz, and provided a brief background of her illustrious academic pedigree and achievements in both science and industry. Prof. Yusuf also provided a backdrop for the talk by illustrating the power and promise of personalised medicine through patient success stories. Prof. M. Omar Rahman, VC, IUB in his closing address, expounded on the potential of precision medicine to revolutionise healthcare by replacing the current one-size-fits-all approach for the vast majority of drugs. Afreen Zaman Khan, Lecturer of Biochemistry, hosted the seminar. Members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, and administration attended the seminar, which was followed by a stimulating and dynamic question and answer session.
