Aga Khan School Dhaka successfully hosts its inaugural Model United Nations Conference

A total of 200 students from 20 different schools had the opportunity to attend one of the most anticipated events of this year, The Aga Khan Interschool Model United Nations. This three-day long programme held on September 12-14, 2019 took place in the school's senior campus. The theme of this MUN, "Minds in Motion" engaged the delegates to think outside the box and seek constructive resolutions to current, controversial world issues. Secretary General Ramisa Mustafa, Director General Nafis Rahman, President Sumaiya Rashid along with the secretariat board worked tirelessly to conduct their first ever interschool MUN.

Chief guests Rina P Soemarno, Indonesia Ambassador to Bangladesh, and Hussein Hyderali from the Aga Khan Development Network Liaison attended the opening ceremony. Principal Dr. Dale Taylor along with the guests shared their valuable experiences and knowledge with the delegates, further enlightening them to work harder as global citizens. The delegates were then escorted to their respective committees led by the experienced executive board members of the MUN. There were a total of 10 committees including special ones like the Joint Crisis Committee (JCC). It was the second time JCC was being held in an MUN in Bangladesh.

On the second day, the school found the delegates in traditional attire. The day hosted three committee sessions as the delegates went head on to express their country's stances while maintaining their foreign policies. Diplomacy, negotiations and critical analysis was crucial for these students to find productive resolutions to the issues at hand. After the long demanding day of delegacy, the students were treated with a night of sheer entertainment and amusement in the Cultural Night. The crowed singed along in jubilation as AKSD's very own band Monochrome conducted performances that had the entire audience on their feet.

On the final day, delegates had the opportunity to present their resolutions in front of the committee. Three days of hard work paid off when the resolution paper finally passed in each committee, showcasing all sorts of solutions for the agendas. During the closing ceremony, AKSD Principal Dr. Taylor congratulated the delegates for their efforts and encouraged them to carry on with such activities. Chief guest Dr. Asa Torkelsson, Country Representative of UNFPA Bangladesh, gave her valuable insight about UN and appreciated students' enthusiasm for creating a better world by tackling pivotal global issues.

Finally, came the moment delegates were in anticipation of, as one by one the executive board members went on stage to announce the awardees. Talented, hardworking delegates were overjoyed in receiving their crests and certificates. Afterwards, they were escorted to the thrill-filled socials, to let loose after days of hard work. Delegates could finally tune out their stress and worries to the captivating melodies.

More attractions of the event included daily delicious meals and snacks courtesy of The Courtyard Bazar along with stalls by Butter the Bakery, juice stands from Paper Boat and other refreshments during committee breaks.

Altogether, AKSMUN was a success for both AKS and the MUN community. The event was held smoothly and gained huge popularity among delegates. This event wouldn't be possible without the active support of AKS teachers and staff, along with the undying effort of the organizers.
