Monash Motorsport Australasian champions for seventh consecutive year
The Monash Motorsport team has blitzed the field again at the annual Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Australasian event with overall winners for a record seven years in a row. The Monash University crew defeated 29 other teams from around Australia, New Zealand, India and Japan. The Australasian Formula SAE event, part of the world's largest university engineering design competition, was held at Calder Park Raceway from December 10-13, 2015.
The 2015 Monash Motorsport team was made up of 75 students from Monash University who were responsible for all elements of the design, construction, management and racing of their open-wheel, formula style race car.
The team's supervisor, Dr. Scott Wordley, said that the team had performed extremely well under pressure.
"It wasn't easy for them, getting the new car across the line, but all their hard work has really paid off. It's a terrific result," Dr. Wordley said.
The Monash Motorsport team is now making plans for next year, when it hopes to visit Europe to compete in equivalent events at Silverstone in the UK and Hockenheimring in Germany. These Formula Student races are the most competitive in the world, with over 100 entries from as many as 25 different countries.
Many of the team's current students will be moving on to internships and graduate positions at top companies, including Rolls Royce Aero Engines, Audi Sport LMP, Ford Australia, Bosch Motorsport and various V8 Supercar teams.
According to team leader Areeb Hassan, the SAE competition was tight. Hassan was especially pleased, given that the car was a completely new and very ambitious design this year.
"It was fantastic to have all our hard work recognised with a perfect score of 150 for Design, and to finish as overall winners," she said.
Monash Engineering is ranked number 1 in Australia. An engineering degree from Monash University is well-known in industry for its ideal integration of practical, hands-on training with theoretical learning. All literature was born for one purpose: to tell stories about us, others, our existence and the universe. These stories and myths build up our children's imagination. Truth be told, they help us live, and more than anything, they help kids to grow and develop.
Every child loves to read. This is because it gives them a whole new world to play and live in. This new dimension lets a child think, create and produce ideas of their own. Along these lines, the child can play with and integrate them into their own particular life, adding new elements.
Some may not be able to imagine their lives without the mountains of books they have read where some had a happy childhood with loving parents and lots of time outside and everything they really needed. For the rest, books have been one of the most important things that were there when one needed an escape, when someone lost friends, when someone's heart was broken, or was lost in the crowd. Adding to that with a heavy heart, there are children who may have never seen books full of stories and imagination apart from their school books.
Addressing this situation, specific measures should be taken for reaching out to these underprivileged children, who are being deprived of a different world full of creativity and vision. To enlighten these little spirits with the doors of an inspiring paradigm, there is always an option of donating books, whether it's used or new. If one cannot buy them books, then one can always donate one from their book shelves.
These books that anyone will give might bring them friends, and sometimes these printed materials will be their friends. Only books can allow these kids to see the world through different eyes.
Studies show that access to books directly relates to students experiencing life in a positive way—behaviorally, academically, and psychologically. Books should be accessible to all children, all the time. Now the question is: how will one donate a book?
AIUB and DIU organise joint conference
American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) and Daffodil International University (DIU) have been selected by the International Association of Universities (IAU), UNESCO, Paris in view of its ardent commitment to internationalisation. The joint conference held on January 28, 2016 in Westin Hotel became a platform bringing together institutional leaders and key officials to further expound and convey their perspectives and experiences on the internationalisation issues and concerns. The observations and global knowledge of the IAU's experts composed of Eva Egron-Polak, Secretary General of IAU, spoke on global internationalisation, Dr. Anna Ciccarelli, IAU Board Member discussed on how internationalisation strategies can be adapted in different contexts and Prof. Dr. S.M. Kabir shared his views on the impact of the regional perspective of internationalisation to Bangladesh.
Giorgio Marinoni, the Manager of HE and Internationalization policy and projects, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC and Prof. Dr. Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Head, QAU, UGC shared their insights as well. The two VCs of AIUB and DIU, Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna and Prof. Dr. Yousuf Mahbubul Islam respectively, welcomed the participants.
NUB celebrates 13th Anniversary
Northern University of Bangladesh (NUB) celebrated its 13th Anniversary at its permanent campus located near the airport.
Presided by Dr. Anu Yousuf Md. Abdullah, Chairman, Northern University Bangladesh Trust, the programme was attended by Anisul Haque, Mayor, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), who was present as the chief guest.
In his speech, Haque emphasised on the need for obtaining knowledge for the development of a nation. He also urged everyone to work shoulder to shoulder to keep the wheels of economic development turning.
Dr. Abdullah stated that in the era of globalisation, NUB is continuing its efforts to modernise and digitise education. He also urged the students to contribute towards building a modern nation through information technology.
Also present at the programme were Dr. AWM Abdul Haque, Acting VC, NUB; Prof. Dr. Anwarul Karim, Pro-VC; Anwar Hussain, Treasurer; Lt. Col. (Retd.) Aqtedar Ahmed Siddiqui, Registrar in Charge; Deans of the various programmes, heads of the various departments, teachers, officials and students.
ULAB organises seminar on postgraduate study at Massey University, NZ
The Department of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering organised a seminar on "Postgraduate Study and Research Opportunities at the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT), Massey University, New Zealand" on January 26, 2016. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rashid, Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Massey University,
New Zealand.
In the talk, Dr. Rashid initially described about undergraduate and postgraduate study requirements and opportunities for Bangladeshi students in New Zealand. He described about the lifestyle and facilities of living and studying in New Zealand. Then he focused his talk on to Massey University and discussed the courses the university offers. He talked about the possible funding opportunities available for the potential research students - those intent to conduct Masters or PhD research at Massey university.
Prof. Dr. Rezaul Karim Mazumder, Head of the Department, ETE; Prof. Dr. Sazzad Hossain, Head of the Department, CSE along with students and other faculties of ULAB were present.
A question-answer session was held with the participation of faculties, students and guests with the speaker in a cordial atmosphere.
At the end of the seminar Dr. Rezaul Karim Mazumder extended his sincere thanks and congratulation to the speaker.
Best Performance Award Ceremony at WUB
The "Best Performance Award" ceremony of World University of Bangladesh (WUB) was held on January 29, 2016 at the auditorium of WUB. The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, VC of the university while Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC, graced the occasion as chief guest. Prof. Dr. M Nurul Islam, Pro-VC and Morsheda Choudhury, Treasurer were present as special guests. Dr. Musfiq Mannan Choudhury, Secretary, BOT, was present as welcome speaker. Deans, Heads of departments, senior faculty members along with parents of students having GPA A+ were also present in this ceremony.
On this occasion, 227 students received certificates for their outstanding performance in the last semester final examinations. Among them 55 students received A+ grade while 172 students received A grade.
