Team from IUBAT participates at Techfest, organised by IIT Bombay

A robotics team of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) named "IUBAT Decepticons" took part in the Techfest 2017-18 held in India. They had earlier participated in the "Crane-O-Mania" segment and stood 1st in the National round which was organised by ICT Division, Bangladesh. Later, they were invited by IIT Bombay to participate in the International round and stood 4th out of 77 International teams at the event. Five students from Mechanical Engineering Department of IUBAT achieved this prestigious recognition. They are Mostahid Ahmed, Rubayet Ahmed, Mashrur Alam, Md. Ashraf Ali, and Mostafizur Rahman Khan.

UAP Foundation elects new chairman

Monzoor Ahmed Chowdhury, a noted businessman in the RMG sector, educationist and Chairman, REC Corporation has been elected as the new Chairman of the University of Asia Pacific Foundation (UAPF) and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of University of Asia Pacific for the year 2018-2019.

The Board of Governors (BOG), in its 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on January 20, 2018 elected Chowdhury, where former Chairman Qayum Reza Chowdhury handed over the charges to him.

The other office bearers elected are Dr. M. Alauddin as Senior Vice Chairman; Atiq-Uz-Zaman and Kazi Mohd. Mofizur Rahman as Vice Chairman; and Qayum Reza Chowdhury as Treasurer.

 

IUB hosts 8th BELTA International Conference

Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) hosted the 8th Bangladesh English Language Teachers Association (BELTA) International Conference titled "Expanding Horizons in English Language Education", held from January 12-14, 2018 at its own campus in Basundhara, Dhaka.

The chief guest at the inaugural session was US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat while the special guest was Prof. M. Omar Rahman, VC, IUB. Others who spoke were the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of IUB Dr. Mahbub Alam; BELTA President Harunur Rashid Khan; Conference Chair Dr. Arifa Rahman; and Head, English Department, IUB Towhid Bin Muzaffar. The keynote paper was presented by internationally reputed language educator Dr. Christine Coombe. There were 10 plenary and featured presentations made by a multi-dimensional group of international and national speakers; 81 concurrent papers, 10 workshops, and 5 colloquia and panel discussions took place during the 3-day conference. The delegates and participants were from Bangladesh as well as from Nepal, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. About 150 English language teachers from primary, secondary, tertiary and madrassa levels from 13 regional BELTA chapters also participated. The conference provided a forum and a networking opportunity for English language teaching professionals from around the country and beyond to share insights and research findings and to discuss topical issues, innovations and challenges.

BRACU student wins a2i competition

Ivana Murtaza Asfara, student of BRAC Business School and member of Team Resurgence of HULT Prize 2017, has won the a2i competition on January 16, 2018. She pitched the idea of low cost biodegradable sanitary napkins at the competition and made it to the top 5 entrepreneurs where each innovator received a check of BDT 5 lakh from Mustafa Jabbar, Minister of Telecommunication. She competed against 1700 participants from all over the country.

Ivana Murtaza Asfara started the application process of a2i, the world's first Innovation Lab run by PM Office and supported by USAID and UNDP. Over the course of a year the project got thoroughly revised and refined involving prototyping, small scale piloting, and feasibility studies. The idea was selected in the top 10 and all the participants had to pitch for public voting through social media and BTV.

Team Resurgence competed in HULT Prize regional round in Shanghai in March 2017 where they came second among 64 teams from universities around the world. Resurgence was mentored by Mahreen Mamoon, Assistant Professor and with generous support from the VC Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb, PhD throughout their journey towards excellence.

 

EWU promises patriotic and responsible individuals at 17th Convocation

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has called on private entrepreneurs and benevolent individuals to come forward to contribute in disseminating knowledge among the people on January 18, 2018, while attending the 17th Convocation of East West University (EWU) at Aftabnagar, Dhaka.

A total of 1840 undergraduate and graduate students conferred degrees and three of them were awarded the prestigious gold medals by the Minister. The convocation speaker, Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University, Dr. Anisuzzaman urged the young graduates to act sensibly and work towards creating a tolerant society.

The Chairperson of the BOT of EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin and the VC Prof. Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hasan also delivered their speech on the occasion. The members of the BOT; the Treasurer; Deans; Chairpersons of the departments; teachers; staff; graduating students and their parents attended the convocation ceremony.

 

National English Carnival by NDEC kicks off on February 1

To boost the use of English and to change the fearful attitude of students towards this language, Notre Dame English Club is back again this year with its premier event the 4th National Carnival 2018. The carnival is scheduled to be held from the February 1-3, 2018.

There are 16 fascinating events for the participants this year and registration is completely free. The event will by powered by The Daily Star while SHOUT is the Youth Engagement Partner.

EU holds Admission Fair for Spring 2018 semester

The Admission Fair for Spring 2018 semester of Eastern University (EU) was held at the university premises from January 16-19, 2018. Mohammed Ali Azzam, Chairman of Admission Committee, EU inaugurated this programme in presence of Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, VC; Treasurer; Deans; Registrar; Chairpersons; Teachers; Officials; and students of EU.

Students seeking admission in Spring semester 2018 were offered 20 percent discount on admission fee, and 10 to 100 percent discount on tuition fee for meritorious students. Attractive gifts were given during the event. During this Admission Fair students received valuable information and advice regarding different career plans from experienced faculty members of EU and Career counsellor.
