IUB holds seminar titled "Achieving Hunger Free Bangladesh"

The School of Life Sciences (SLS) and International Center for Biotechnology and Health (ICBH) at the Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) jointly organised a seminar entitled "Achieving Hunger Free Bangladesh," on November 2, 2017 at IUB campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka. The resource person of the seminar was Prof. Zahurul Karim, PhD, Fellow BAS, Fellow the World Academy of Sciences. 

Prof. Karim elaborated on the challenges that Bangladesh has been facing with regard to food security ever since its inception. He provided deepest insights and experienced perspective on the progress that Bangladesh has made until now, and solutions that still need to come up with. 

Following the presentation, the floor was open for Q&A session where both students and faculty members participated. The programme ended with a vote of thanks given by Dr. Mahboob Morshed, Assistant Professor in the School of Life Sciences at IUB.

 

BRACU tops  private university chart

Pioneering nanosatellite technology by launching BRAC Onnesha, BRAC University (BRACU) has again reached the pinnacle of success, this time securing its position as the top ranking private university in Bangladesh.

BRACU came around halfway in the recently published QS Asia University Rankings 2018, a list of some of the 400 best Asian universities.

This reflects how the 32 academic programmes, 16 undergraduate and the rest postgraduate, featured through 4 schools, 3 institutes and 7 departments of BRACU embodies this fast-moving region and the ever-changing world. 

This year's compilation was made by assessing 10 indicators, including the proportion of academic staff qualified to PhD level and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students at the university, says the listing authority in its website.

Entrepreneurship Department of DIU launches "Green Shade"

Green Shade - the first ever business initiative based on rooftop gardening of the students of Entrepreneurship Department of Daffodil International University (DIU) has started its journey officially, financed by Bangladesh Venture Capital Ltd (BVCL). 

The launching ceremony of Green Shade was held November 1, 2017 at Banquet Hall of the university. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, BOT, DIU inaugurated the ceremony as the chief guest. In the programme, Golam Monowar Kamal, Managing Director, BVCL handed over a check of BDT 5 lakh to the three initiators of Green Shade. Iqbal Hossain Shemul, Maidul Islam, and Abdullah Al Mahadi - the students of Entrepreneurship Department of DIU - initiated this business project. An MoU was also signed at the programme. Prof. Dr. Farid A Sobhani, Dean, HRDI; Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director (Students Affairs); Mohammad Shibli Shahriar, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Entrepreneurship; and Md. Rashedul Islam, Coordinator, BVCL were also present at the programme. 

 

EU appoints new Vice Chancellor

Eastern University (EU) has appointed Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Islam as the Vice Chancellor (Acting) on the November 5, 2017. 

Prof. Islam has over 50 years of teaching and research experience in various reputed public and private universities home and abroad. He was the former Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Chairman of the Department of Physics of Chittagong University (CU). He also held many important positions such as Hall Provost, Member of the Academic, the Syndicate and the Senate of CU. He was also Dean of the Faculty of E&T of reputed private universities in Bangladesh. In 1972, he received his PhD degree from Glasgow University, UK, and pursued his Post Doctoral from the same university with Commonwealth Fellowship.

 

EWU arranges public lecture and seminar 

A public lecture on Bangabandhu and a seminar on food sustainability were arranged by the East West University (EWU) on November 2, 2017 at University campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka.

The Department of Social Relations of the university organised the public lecture titled "Bangabandhu Janaboktrita". The lecture was delivered by Dr. Muntassir Mamoon, Professor, Department of History, University of Dhaka. The speaker expressed his satisfaction at the acceptance of the historical March 7, 1971 speech of Bangabandhu by UNESCO as a world documentary heritage. 

Besides, a seminar on "Food Sustainability in the Context of Bangladesh" was organised by the Department of Business Administration of EWU and the Swedish Institute (SI) Alumni Network in Bangladesh. The keynote speaker of the seminar was Md. Nazrul Islam, E-agricultural expert at USAID. 

Among those attending the seminar and public lecture were Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, BOT, EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank; Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Member, BOT; Prof. Dr. MM  Shahidul Hassan, VC, EWU; Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam, Pro-VC, EWU; and Mikael Salomonsson, Project Manager, SI Alumni Network, Swedish Institute.

 

PUPROA elects new executive committee

A 13-member new executive committee of Private Universities Public Relations Officers Association (PUPROA) for the year 2017-2018 was formed recently. Md. Lutfor Rahman, Director (Public Relations) of American International University Bangladesh was elected President while Monirul Islam Rintu, Director (Public Relations) of European University of Bangladesh was elected as the General Secretary of the association at the General Meeting. The other members of the Executive Committee are: Hasan Saimum Wahab, Vice President-1 (Independent University Bangladesh); Mohammad Imtiaj, Vice President-2 (Eastern University); Nasima Khondoker, Vice President-3; Abu Sadat, Assistant General Secretary-1 (United International University); Md. Anowar Habib Kazal, Assistant General Secretary-2 (Daffodil International University); Mamun Ul Matin, Treasurer (Fareast International University); Md. Ahsan Habib, Organising Secretary (American International University Bangladesh); Md.
