Paving a way for future entrepreneurs

Long gone are the days of studying engineering just for the sake of science. Students nowadays have progressed to the heights where they are talented enough to combine their science knowledge with business ideas. In short, they are becoming entrepreneurs.
The concept of entrepreneurship is fascinating, with the ability to be one's own boss and mentor. An entrepreneur is daring, courageous and strong-willed. The students at North South University (NSU) have showcased that they possess all of these attributes at Capstone Design Project showcase. The final year students of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NSU have laboured for 8 long months to create and develop their projects in order to transform them into tech start-ups.
On August 17, 2017, in the first phase of the event, NSU ACM Student Chapter (NSU ACMSC) organised a tech-talk session, where successful representatives of the tech industry shared their experiences with the students. They were the bright minds that overcame obstacles and built their own empires. Vice Chancellor of NSU, Professor Dr. Atiqul Islam adorned the seat of the chief guest; Professor Dr. M. Rokonuzzaman, Dean, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, was the session chair. The tech-talk was inaugurated by Associate Professor of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the faculty advisor of NSU ACM Student Chapter, Dr. Shazzad Hosain.
After his inaugural speech about the purpose and goal behind the initiative, the rest of the guests took to the stage. The guests were Tanzeev Haque, CEO of DeshiPro; Mamunur Rahman, CEO of CTrends; Ariful Hasan Opu, Founder of Bangladesh Innovation Forum; Tapan Kanti Sarkar, President at Information Security Alliance, Bangladesh. Md. Al Amin Sarker, Founder of Barikoi.com; Minhaz Anwar, Head of GP Accelerator; Golam Monowar Kamal, Managing Director of Bangladesh Venture Capital Ltd.; and Habibullah N Karim, CEO of Technohaven. They imparted their wisdom and knowledge and inspired the students to bring about a revolutionary change in the future tech industry.
The second phase began in the afternoon when the teams displayed and demonstrated their projects to everyone. The projects of NSU ACMSC Innovation Challenge were scrutinised by a panel of judges which included Dr. Kazi Mohammad Abdus Salam, Dr. Hasan Uz Zaman and Dr. Rajesh Palit, esteemed faculty members of ECE Department. The judges marked the project based on four criteria - innovation, usefulness, completeness and presentation. This offered the competitors a chance of impressing the judges as well as winning prizemoney to help fund their projects.
The champions of the Challenge were Touhid Rahman, Orindom Khalid Chowdhury, K.B. Riaz Ahmed Alif and Mohammad Muhiuzzaman, with their project "Affordable renewable energy". The goal of their project was to make a solar powered refrigerator to enable people from rural areas to have easy access to fresh food even without electricity. The joint first runner-up were "Electronic eye-drop aid" and "Mars Rover", while the joint second runner-up project were "Real time student log with easy attendance" and "3D Printer". The champions of the challenge won a sum of BDT 10000, while the first and second runners-up won BDT 6000 and BDT 4000 respectively.
SHOUT was the Youth Engagement Partner of the event.
BUBT organises workshop on research methodology
A workshop on "Research Design, Sampling and Questionnaire", organised by the Self Assessment Committee of the Department of Business Administration, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) was held on August 28, 2017 at its campus in Mirpur 2, Dhaka. Faculty members of the department of Business Administration of the university attended the workshop.
Prof. Md. Abu Saleh, VC of BUBT, inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest and mentioned research as the most powerful method of learning for the society. He said, "Teachers must do research for identifying socio-economic problems of our country, and the study of research should include new ideas and innovations."
Prof. Jagadish Chandra Shukla Das, Professor of Accounting (Retd.), University of Dhaka, conducted the workshop as keynote speaker and the special guest. Prof. Dr. Syed Masud Husain, Dean, Faculty of Business, presided over the workshop.
IUB holds Autumn 2017 semester orientation programme
Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) implemented its Autumn 2017 Semester's orientation programme for newly admitted undergraduate students on September 9, 2017 at the university's own campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
Welcoming the newly enrolled students and the parents, Prof. M Omar Rahman, VC, IUB, heartily thanked them for choosing IUB towards crafting their lives by coping with new challenges. He called upon the freshers to capitalise on the "IUB Life" in order to come out as the best professionals in respective fields along with becoming global citizens.
Prof. Milan Pagon, Pro-VC, IUB; Prof. Sarwar Uddin Ahmed, Dean, School of Business; Prof. Shahriar Khan, Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Science; Dr. Abdul Khaleque, Dean, School of Environmental Science and Management; Dr. Mahbub Alam, Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; and Prof. Rita Yusuf, Dean, School of Life Sciences also welcomed the new students and spoke at the programme.
EWU appoints Dr. Alam as new Pro-VC
On being appointed by Abdul Hamid, Chancellor of East West University (EWU), and President of Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam has joined as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU from September 10, 2017 for the next four years. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, BOT, EWU and Prof. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, VC, EWU welcomed Dr. Alam at the university's campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka.
Before joining EWU, Dr. Alam was Professor of the Department of English at University of Dhaka (DU). He has completed his B.A. and M. A. Degree from the Department of English at DU, a second masters degree from Simon Fraser University, Canada in 1980 and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 1984.
Dr. Alam's research articles have been published in many national and international journals. He received SAARC Literary Award in 2012 and Bangla Academy Award in 2013.
Workshop on "Classroom Performance and Evaluation for Ensuring International Standard"
Department of Education, Self Assessment Committee (SAC), Uttara University recently organised a daylong workshop on "Classroom Performance and Evaluation in Education Department for Ensuring International Standard" at the IQAC Seminar Hall of the university. Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, President, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), was the Chief Guest at the event. Professor Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University, chaired the inaugural session. Professor Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University was the special guest and Professor Dr. Debi Narayan Rudra Paul, Director, IQAC was the guest of honour.
Professor Taslima Begum, Chairperson, Department of Education, presented the keynote paper on 'Education for International Understanding'. She mentioned that there are four pillars of learning: learning to be, learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together. Robiul Kabir Chowdhury, Senior Specialist, Exam and Evaluation, BEDU, Dhaka Board, and Shamima Akhter, Specialist, Exam and Evaluation, BEDU, Dhaka Board were the two resource persons in the technical session of the workshop. The resource persons discussed on creative question, creative classroom and multiple choice question, and also emphasised on the proper evaluation of the students by using Bloom's Taxanomy.
