CYC organises Word Wizard

Connecting Youth for Change (CYC) successfully organised the grand finale of Word Wizard, an English vocabulary skills competition for high school students, on May 19, 2017 at Joydebpur Govt. Primary School in Gazipur. Word Wizard was designed as a team competition, where participating students received the opportunity to acquire and showcase their English vocabulary skills. The initiative was aimed at providing encouragement to the students to develop their knowledge of English vocabulary by promoting the practice of learning new words with correct spelling, accurate meaning and sharp pronunciation. This practice would ultimately serve the greater purpose of building their confidence to effectively communicate in English.

The first round of Word Wizard was held on May 1, 2017. Acing a written test, thirty teams from three categories qualified for the final round. The format of the final round was based on an adapted version of a spelling bee competition. Three teams won the championship in three different categories out of 149 teams and a total of 447 participants proving their merit and mettle. The deserving winners in Class Eight category were Tanvir Ahamad, Shafakat Ahmed Moobin and Shahriar Tarek Mahmud. Championship in Class 9 category was won by Saria Nafiu Shara, Tasnim Tabassum Jinia and Sanjida Rahman Preety. Worthy winners in Class Ten category were Antara Firuz Tafhim, Afia Anjum Lina and Fawzia Yeasmin.

Word Wizard was supported by The Daily Star as the Youth Engagement Partner, Media Partner SHOUT, Food & Beverage Partner BD Foods Limited and Radio Partner Radio Shadhin 92.4 FM.

 

Workshop on "How to Make Creative Questions" at UU

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Uttara University (UU) organised a daylong workshop on "How to Make Creative Questions" on May 5, 2017 at IQAC Seminar Hall of School of Business. Fifty-two teachers participated from thirteen colleges and institutions of Dhaka, Gazipur, and Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. 

The programme was inaugurated by the Pro-VC of UU, Prof. Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha. The inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Nazrul Islam, Dean of School of Business. The Director of IQAC of UU, Prof. Dr. DNR Paul and the resource person, Prof. Dr. Khademul Islam also spoke on the inaugural session of the workshop.

In the daylong workshop, the participating teachers learned different aspects of the creative questions such as Recall, Comprehension, Understanding and Application in detail through theoretical sessions and practical exercises. The main outcome of the workshop was the enhancement of understanding of the college teachers regarding the formation of creative questions.

In the certificate awarding session, Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Education, was present as the chief guest. This ceremony was chaired by Prof. Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, VC of UU. Prof. Taslima Begum, former Chairman of Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board and Chairman of Department of Education of UU, Prof. Dr. Nazrul Islam, Dean of School of Business and Prof. Dr. Khademul Islam, Training Specialist of National Academy for Education Management (NAEM) of Bangladesh also spoke at the workshop.  

 

Pharma Fiesta 2017 at UAP

The Pharma Science Club (PSC), Department of Pharmacy, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) organiSed the Pharma Fiesta 2017 at UAP Plaza on May 17, 2017. 

A total of 34 participants from 8 universities participated in the contest in two segments of Pharma Olympiad and Poster Exhibition. In Pharma Olympiad, Jahangirnagar University, North South University and Southeast University won the top three positions while in poster exhibition, Dhaka University, North South University and UAP secured the champion, first and second runner-up positions respectively. 

Prof. Dr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, Head of the Pharmacy Department, distributed prizes among the winners. The fiesta also included Stall Exhibition, Brand Name Competition, Health Check up, and Gaming & Drug Puzzle. 

Earlier, Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP addressed the programme as the chief guest. In the event, two pharmaceutical companies - Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Sanofi Bangladesh Ltd. - took part.

 

Admission Open House for Summer 2017 at EU

The Admission Open House for Summer 2017 semester of Eastern University (EU) was held on May 16-19, 2017. Mohammed Ali Azzam, Member of BOT and Chairman of Admission Committee, EU inaugurated this programme in presence of Prof. Dr. Abdur Rab, VC; Treasurer; Deans; Registrar; Advisor; Chairpersons; Director, Admission; teachers, officials and students of EU. 

Admission seekers in Summer semester 2017 enjoyed 20% discount on admission fee and meritorious students received 10 percent to 100 percent discount on tuition fee. Attractive gifts were given during the event. In this event, students got valuable information and advice on different career plans from experienced faculty members of EU and the career counselor. During the fair, admission tests of bachelor programmes were held each day. Direct admission opportunity was available for students with combined GPA 7 and above. 

 

BRACU organises "Coffee with the CEOs" 

On May 20, 2017, BRAC Business School arranged an interactive session titled "Coffee with the CEOs" at the residential campus of BRAC University (BRACU) in Savar. The session was conducted under the theme "Textile: the next destination for our business graduates".

BRACU VC Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D. attended as the special guest. Prof. Dr. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury, Dean of BRAC Business School introduced the guests - Abul Bashar Mahmood, Divisional Merchendising Manager, Li & Fung Bangladesh Ltd and Tareq Amin, Moderator, Editor and Publisher, Bangladesh Textile Today.

Prof. Andaleeb advised the students to think out-of-the-box and come out of bookish knowledge so that there can be new innovations and also asked stakeholders from textiles industry to arrange career fair in BRACU to recruit business graduates.

Tareq Amin said if the youth utilise their potential properly in textile industries, then it can emerge as number 1 in the world. Abul Bashar Mahmood pointed out that the importance of the textile industry in the economy of Bangladesh. He mentioned that the industry needs young business graduates who can add value to it.
