BRACU holds orientation for Summer 2017

BRAC University (BRACU) organised the freshman orientation for Summer 2017 on May 2, 2017 at Golf Garden in the capital.

BRACU VC Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D., presented the inaugural speech, congratulating students for qualifying for admission for the Summer 2017 undergraduate session at BRACU. He said BRACU aims to produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also capable of bringing positive changes in society.

All department heads, faculty members and administrative staff welcomed the students along with their parents who attended the orientation. Dr. Ansar Ahmed, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, presented the closing remarks.

As part of freshman orientation programme of Summer 2017, BRACU also organised First Year Advising Team (FYAT) Day on May 3.

Bangladeshi student at Yale awarded with Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

Mayesha Alam, a PhD student of political science at Yale University, has been awarded The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, a graduate school fellowship for outstanding immigrants and children of immigrants in the United States.

Mayesha was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, but moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, where she witnessed the country's transition to democracy. It shaped her worldview and solidified an interest in peace building and diplomacy, leading her to Mount Holyoke College for a bachelor's and Georgetown University for a master's degree. Mayesha co-founded the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and has also worked with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Her 2014 book, "Women and Transitional Justice: Progress and Persistent Challenges in Retributive and Restorative Processes", was inspired by her work at the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya and by her parents' experiences surviving the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. She intends to be a public intellectual and stateswoman who shapes civic discourse on human rights and leads principled and effective national security and foreign policy engagement.

ULAB and EU team leaves for international study tour in China

ULAB International Office and Eastern University Career Services and International Office, respectively, have arranged international study tour programmes in China for its students, in association with Yunnan Open University, China, titled "Experiencing Chinese Language and Culture". A team of eleven participants from EU and thirteen participants from ULAB will take part in this eleven-day programme. During their tour they will visit locations around the city, including Stone Forest, Yunnan Nationalities Museum, Green Lake, etc. Besides visiting these landscapes, they will be taught fundamentals of Chinese language, tea-making, painting, Peking opera painting, calligraphy and so on. This tour hopes to help the students connect with the Chinese culture, broaden their perspectives, and bring a positive change in their lives. 

SAU celebrates March for Science movement

The Bangladesh Alliance for Science, a chapter of the Cornell Alliance for Science and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) jointly organised a rally and seminar to celebrate the March for Science movement in Bangladesh on the occasion of Earth Day. A seminar titled "Prospect of Agricultural Biotechnology for Sustainable Food Security in Bangladesh" was also held on April 22, 2017 at the SAU Agricultural Faculty Auditorium.

March for Science is the first step of a global movement to defend the vital role science plays in our health, safety, economies, and governments. The science involved in agriculture is rapidly changing. Since 1996, 2 billon hectares of arable land have been planted with biotech crops. Bangladesh is thriving to progress in the fields of crop biotechnology and genetic engineering. Distinguished speakers engaged in this domain participated in the seminar. Experts, faculty members, students and media representatives also attended the seminar.

UAP hosts National IT Competition 

A day-long National IT Competition for Youth with Disabilities was held at UAP Plaza on May 6, 2017. The competition was jointly organised for the second time by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) with the help of Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) and University of Asia Pacific. 

This year, a total of 81 participants, aged between 13 and 19, took part in the competition this year in four categories: Visual Impairment, Physical Impairment, Speech and Hearing Impairment, and Neuro and Development Disabilities (Autistic or Autism). All contestants participating in the competition worked on Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the internet.

In Visual Impairment, Mukhlesur Rahman, Abdullah Al Noman and Sohodeb Kumar won top three positions. Md. Mollah Abu Shamim, Subroto Kirtoniya and Md. Imran Hossain from Physical Impairment have secured positions while Sanjida Akhtar Jinuk, Kazi Adnan Hossain, and Md. Sujan have won prizes in Neuro and Development and Amit Sujauddin Turag, Zahidul Islam Tuhin, and Rishta Galib got the prizes in Speech and Hearing Impairment respectively. 

SUB distributes laptops among students

As part of digitisation of Bangladesh, State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organised a "Laptop Distribution Ceremony" among its students on April 27, 2017. State Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Advocate Tarana Halim, MP, was the chief guest and distributed laptops among the students.

The State Minister encouraged the idea and urged students to be attentive towards building the nation and becoming technology friendly. She also instructed the students to use the best of technology in their academic and personal advancements.

On behalf of the university Dr. A.M. Shamim, President, BOT, Major General (Retd.) M Shahjahan, Acting VC, and A.H. Lutful Hassan, Registrar, spoke on the occasion. The programme was attended by the faculty and staff members, educationists, students and distinguished guests. 

DIU wins Global Inclusion Award 2017 

Bangladesh became the champion, competing with 160 countries of five regions at the Global Inclusion Award 2017 under the category of Global Money Week ceremony held in Berlin, Germany on May 3, 2017. The award has been presented in a ceremony which was jointly organised by Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and G20 Presidency.

Daffodil International University (DIU), the lead partner of Child & Youth Finance International and Bangladesh Bank along with jobsbd.com, country's first job portal jointly received this prestigious award for their sustainable and innovative financial inclusion and financial education initiatives. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman of DIU and SK Sur Chowdhury, the Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank represented Bangladesh and received the award.

Primeasia University appoints new VC

Prof. Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury has joined as the Vice Chancellor of Primeasia University on April 30, 2017, with the approval of the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Chancellor of universities.

Dr. Chowdhury was the Pro-VC of Eastern University prior to joining at Primeasia University. He was the former Professor of the School of Business, Executive Director, Dean of the School of Business, Director of the BBA Program, Member of the Syndicate and the Director, Career and Professional Development Services of North South University. He has 29 years of teaching and research experience with various reputed institutions in Bangladesh, Canada, and USA. He earned his bachelor's and master's degree in Statistics from Jahangirnagar University in the year 1986 and 1987, respectively. He has published more than 50 papers and two books and presented more than 40 papers in different international conferences.
