UIU team becomes Champion in Energy Hackathon 2017

United International University's team "Clean Energy" became Champion in Energy Hackathon 2017 arranged by Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. The theme of this category was "Remove biomass cook stove with clean innovations". They won a prizemoney worth BDT 50,000 and a government incubation support. The prize was handed over by State Minister, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, MP. The team consisted of Md. Raihan Uddin, Sehmim Islam, Sandip Kumar and Rezwanul Karim with Md. Arifur Rahman Talukder as the team leader.

EPSRC and DFID (UK) funded the project and the cook stove was jointly developed by UIU, University of Sussex, Gamos Ltd. (UK), ACTS (Kenya), and LIGTT (USA).


NSUDC organises Inter Varsity Debate Championship

NSU Inter Varsity is the biggest inter university debate championship organised by NSU Debate Club (NSUDC). This year, the event was titled as "NSU IV 2017 - The Reincarnation".

The tournament commenced on March 30 with the Bangla first preliminary rounds. After that, on April 6-7, were the days for the English debates. On April 15, the grand finale was held, followed by a prize giving ceremony. The session was conducted by Dr. M M Akash, Professor, Department of Economics, University of Dhaka. Prof. Dr. G.U. Ahsan, Pro-VC (Designate), NSU chaired the session.

Prof. Abdur Rob Khan, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Mohammad Mahboob Rahman, Dean, School of Business and Economics, Prof. Sharifuddin Ahmed, Chairman, Department of History & Philosophy, Dr. Nova Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has performed as the special judges.

In the Bangla debates, the champion was Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS) and the runners-up was BUET. Muhit Hasan and Tawhid Chowdhury from NSU were the top speakers. Subsequently, in English debate final, NSU was the champion and Islamic University of Technology (IUT) became the runners-up. Asif Mehedi Adi from NSU became "Debater of the Final". Wasifa Nowshin from IBA and Asif Mehedi Adi from NSU both became "Debater of the Tournament". In the Novice category of English Debate, IBA became the champion.


Journey of Youth into Diplomacy

Besides promoting and popularising model UN conferences in all the divisions of Bangladesh, United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) has begun to organise diplomatic assemblies all around the country since the beginning of 2017. Diplomatic assemblies are the specialised UN model conferences that provide a platform for the young people who are interested in exploring global issues. 

The first diplomatic assembly of the year was held in Jagannath University on February 24-25, 2017. Around 160 delegates from different educational institutions such as Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, and East West University participated in this conference. The conference offered UNDP, UNEP and SCBA committees. 

The second diplomacy assembly of the year was held in Rangpur, organised by UNYSAB Rangpur Wing and included similar committees. The conference was held in Begum Rokeya University on March 24-25, 2017. Nearly 176 delegates from various school, college and universities participated in this conference.

The diplomatic assembly provides the youth a platform to explore their talents and take Bangladesh to a higher level in the global market using their negotiation skills. Within upcoming months, UNYSAB plans to organise 3 more diplomatic assemblies in Dhaka University, Rajshahi University and in Sylhet.


Southern University organises 18th Entrepreneurship Fair 

With the theme "Promoting National Heritage", the 18th Entrepreneurship Fair & Business Plan Competition 2017 was held at Southern University Bangladesh on April 20-21, 2017. Department of Business Administration organised the fair; Dr. Apurup Chowdhury, Chairman of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation was the present as the chief guest.

VC of Southern University, Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Mustafa, Initiator and Founder Prof. Sarwar Jahan , Pro-VC Prof. Engr. M Ali Ashraf, Dean of Business Administration Prof. Dr A.N.M Abdul Muqtader, Prof. A.J.M Nuruddin Chowdhury, Registrar Dr. Mantazul Islam Chowdhury, Head of Business Administration Dr. Ishrat Jahan, Associate Professor of Business Administration and Coordinator of Fair Kazi Nazmul Huda, competition judges artist Ahmed Newaz and CEO and Principal of  Institute of Fashion and Technology (VOGUE) Mansoor Alam were also present at the fair.

Students of BBA Entrepreneurship Development came up with creative business models in 16 stalls where the theme was represented.


UAP holds orientation programme for Spring '17 

The orientation programme for the students of newly enrolled students of Spring '17 was held at UAP permanent campus on April 15, 2017.

Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP was the chief guest and delivered his welcome speech for newly enrolled students. In his remarks, he advised the freshers not to involve in unethical activities and give utmost priority on their studies.

Among others, Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Chairman, BOT, Anhar A. Chowdhury, Sr. Vice Chairman, BOT, Air Commodore (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhruy, Treasurer and two alumni members addressed the programme.

Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro-VC, Heads and faculty members of the departments also attended the function.


Aichi Medical College observes  World Health Day 2017

The Department of Community Medicine of Aichi Medical College organised a seminar on April 9, 2017 at AMC Building. The seminar was titled on the slogan of World Health Day – "Depression: let's talk". 

The speaker was Dr. Nasrin Sultana Chowdhury, Associate Professor and Departmental Head who conducted the session. Principal, Vice Principal, Department Heads, different faculty members, hospital doctors and students were also present in the seminar. 


DIU student joins 35th FIFF 2017 in Iran

Syed Minhaj Hossain, student of Department of Multimedia and Creative Technology of Daffodil International University is attending Iran's largest annual film festival, the 35th Fajr International Film Festival 2017 held from April 19 to 28, in Tehran for "Talent Campus" programme with scholarship through International Affairs, DIU. The main purpose of the programme is to primarily familiarise young filmmakers with different aspects of the New Iranian Cinema as well as the development and training of the future generation of filmmakers.

35th FIFF 2017 is an event that celebrates cultural exchange, displays creative achievements of highly acclaimed cineastes and pays tribute to quality local and international films.


IUB holds talk on research project "Writing Our Lives"

The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) organised a talk on "Writing Our Lives: A Research Project with Successful Women in Bangladesh" recently at IUB's own campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.

Dr. Ann Le Mare, a researcher and academic, working with UK and Norwegian universities and Dr. Angela Everitt, a researcher and a faculty member at Open University, UK, were the key speakers at the session. The event was based on a research project revealing the stories of successful Bangladeshi women in order to influence younger girls and women in and outside Bangladesh.

Prof. M Omar Rahman, VC, IUB and Dr. Mahbub Alam, Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS) delivered the welcoming remarks. Obydullah Al Marjuk, Sr. Lecturer of SLASS introduced the speakers to the audience.
