NSUSS celebrates Pahela Baishakh 1424

On April 14, 2017, North South University Shangskritik Shangathan (NSUSS) celebrated the first day of Bengali New Year 1424 - Pahela Baishakh. The campus was decorated with festoons, flyers, and handmade banners. The festival started off in the morning with colourful props, especially handmade for the occasion. There was a cultural programme designed for the day by the talented and vibrant performers of NSUSS. The chief guest was the former ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN, Professor Emeritus A K Abdul Momen, Chairman, Chittagong Stock Exchange. The special guest was Pro-VC Prof. Dr. G.U. Ahsan. 

There was an art competition organised for the children of the hardworking staff members of NSU. A Bengali culture-oriented fair was held. The food stalls had delicious food, sweets and beverages. The students of NSUSS performed songs of various genre and performed traditional dance as well. There was a special segment where a group of bauls performed. The flash mob was an attractive segment of the entire day's programme. There was a puppet show as well. Lastly, the band Chirkut went up on stage and engaged the crowd with their soulful music. 

UIU holds 4th convocation 

The 4th convocation of United International University (UIU) was held on April 15, 2017, at UIU Permanent Campus (United City, Madani Avenue, Satarkul, Vatara, Dhaka). Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, presided over the ceremony while Prof. Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC was present as the special guest. Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, University of Asia Pacific, was present as the convocation speaker. The ceremony was also addressed by Hasan Mahmood Raja, Chairman, BOT, UIU and Prof. Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, VC, UIU.

A total of 1610 students from different disciplines were conferred undergraduate and graduate degrees while six meritorious students received Gold Medals for their excellent results.

All Deans, heads of the Departments, teachers, administrative staffs, journalists, educationists and vice chancellors of different universities attended the convocation programme.

Debate workshop at CU

With an aim to encourage logical thinking among the youth, the month-long "13th CUDS Debate & Public Speaking Workshop 2017" was held at Chittagong University (CU) recently. 

Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS) organised the event which kicked off on February 13. CU VC Prof. Iftekhar Uddin inaugurated the workshop. 

Over a month, participants got the opportunity to train in the rules and art of Bangla parliamentary and English parliamentary debate. The workshop also featured subjects like traditional debate, Asian parliamentary debate and how to deal with the fear of public speaking. 

Ninety teams took part in Bangla debate competition where team "Players" clinched the title of champion; team "Choy Dofa" earned the runner-up trophy. 

The English debate competition had 70 teams participating and the champion was Saima and Sayeed's team. The best speaker of the competition was Nusrat Jahan from Journalism department.

A public speaking competition was also held among 100 participants where Sayeed Bin Mohiuddin won the championship.

CU VC enlightened the participants with his speech as the chief guest at the closing programme. "University is a place for liberal thinking and for two decades CUDS is helping youths through the practice of debate. This kind of workshop will make students capable of competing in international programmes," the VC said. 

CUDS Moderator Prof. Emran Hossain hoped that the participants can demonstrate their strong leadership abilities in future for the greater good of the country.

The concluding programme was addressed by CU Law Faculty Dean Prof. A.B.M. Abu Noman; Social Science Faculty Dean Prof.  Farid Uddin Ahmed; CU English Department Chairperson Prof. Kamal Uddin; CU Teachers Association's General Secretary Shukanto Bhattacharjo; CUDS President Rafiul Islam; and its Secretary Ataur 

Rahman, among others.

CUB launches "One Year Celebration" programme

Dennis Dawson, Senator, Quebec, Canada and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MP, House of Commons for Toronto, Canada, jointly inaugurated the "One Year Celebration" programme of Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB).

They appreciated the university for the title "Inspiring Applied Knowledge" in a discussion program at its campus on April 4, 2017. Dr. Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, Founder and Chairman, CUB gave vote of thanks at the event. Andrew Goodridge, Parliamentary Assistant, House of Commons, Canada, Mahjabin Khaled, MP and Prof. William H. Derrenger, VC, also spoke as the special guests.

NDC organises OBAC National Adventure Festival 2017

The Outward Bound Adventure Club (OBAC) of Notre Dame College (NDC) organised the OBAC National Adventure Festival 2017, sponsored by American International University Bangladesh (AIUB). The 3-day long event kicked off on March 23. The fest began with the participation of more than 800 students from schools and colleges around Dhaka City. In the inaugural ceremony, mountaineer M. A. Muhit was the chief guest and musician George Lincoln D'Costa was the special guest. The events included Adventure Olympiad, Hidden Object Quest, Pinpoint on Map, Around Bangladesh in 1 Minute, Obstacle Cycle Riding, and a thrilling Treasure Hunt. Over 100 wall magazines and photographs taken by the participants were on display the whole day. St. Joseph Higher Secondary School achieved the glory of being the champion of the treasure hunt. In this closing ceremony, Pro-VC of AIUB Prof. Dr. Charles C. Villanueva was present as chief guest and Tajdin Hassan, Head of Marketing, The Daily Star was the special guest. SHOUT was the Youth Engagement Partner of this event.

BUTEX hosts business case competition

BUTEX Business Club arranged a two phase - intra and inter - case competition. The intra phase began through the workshop with Ayman Sadiq, founder of 10 Minute School. A total of 131 teams registered for this competition.

The 14 teams selected for the second round attended a workshop by veteran Tanzir Islam and Akib Moin Arka, former students of IBA, DU, to develop their ideas about solving cases. Seven teams went on to the final round.

Dr. Abbas Uddin Shiyak, Principal Engineering Consultant of Reed Consulting Bangladesh Ltd., Nabi Khan, Chief Business Officer of Color City Ltd. And Saiful Islam Khan, Managing Director of Essential Clothing Limited were the judges of the final round held on April 4, 2017. 

The champion was Team Arbitrators, first runner-up was Team Pioneers and second runner-up was Team Quartet. The programme closed with remarks from the VC Prof. Engr. Mashud Ahmed and club moderator Arif Iqbal, lecturer of Textile Engineering Management Department.

CIU signs MoU with Rennes School of Business, France

Chittagong Independent University (CIU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rennes School of Business (RSB) - a triple-crowned business school of France. The signing ceremony took place at the Conference Room of CIU.

Raphael Jaeger, Director of Alliance Française, Chittagong was present as the chief guest while Prof. Dr. Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury, VC of CIU presided over the programme. Under this MoU, as many as six students from MBA programme of CIU will get the opportunity to pursue MSc degree in International Management at RSB.

BRACU hosts first ChemBio Hackathon in Bangladesh

BRAC University (BRACU) recently made history by hosting the first-ever ChemBio HACKATHON in Bangladesh. The event started on March 28, 2017 and ended on April 30, 2017 followed by the HACKATHON Day on April 1, 2017. This was followed by the Presentation Day on April 13, 2017 which took place at the Auditorium of BRACU. The event was organised by the Department of Pharmacy while Nuvista Pharma Limited was a contributor to the event. The distinguished guests present in this event were Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director, BRAC Institute of Languages, Dr. Farhat M. Iftekharuddin, Pro-VC, BRACU, and Dr. Ansar Ahmed, Director, Institutional Effectiveness, BRACU.

A total of 7 teams (each consisting of 5 students) participated in this event. The event was a multidisciplinary approach where students were trained during a three-day session to address and provide a hands-on approach in solving modern molecular design problems employing in-silico methods.
