APP REVIEW

Letterspace: For Simple Writing

Platform: iOS.

Download if: you're a writer, need organized notes or a journal.

Don't download if: You're looking for something like Evernote that does group work or gives word count (What kind of writing app doesn't have a word count system).

What's the most annoying thing about writing on a tablet or phone? The lack of a scrolling bar. Letterspace solves that with a swipe bar that makes editing fluid, especially for people on the go. It's like having the space bar and arrows on a keyboard in one simple bar, and the instincts kick in while using it. Also, it helps that you don't have to pinch the screen to find that one line you need to edit. The app design is simple and soothing, with fonts and backgrounds that put minimal pressure on the eyes. Sepia background with Courier font – reminiscent of typewriter days – is a personal favorite. Hashtags and a markdown system help organize files, and there's an archive for finished projects. There are these quirky touches at every procedure, like a second-long starting screen that says nothing except, "Write what should not be forgotten," and a delete reminder that reads "What's done cannot be undone."
