4 LEGIT REASONS TO WATCH SERIE A

NO SERIOUSLY, YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY

In all fairness, this is the only reason you'll ever need to watch Serie A

The Serie A was once the best league in the world. The clubs attracted the best talent in the world, dominated Europe like one female character from a Hollywood movie everyone wished didn't exist. But that's all in the past; why should people watch
Serie A now?

OLD PLAYERS
Why do people watch videos of cats playing the piano? Because cats aren't supposed to play the piano. Likewise, old people aren't supposed to play football but the Serie A defies that fact and produces a spectacle much like the aforementioned video, only it's less watched. The Serie A has the highest average player age among all major European leagues, and the situation is not getting better because 13 players above the age of 30 joined the league last summer, a ten year high. If you're one of those people who like their football calm and soothing, watch the Serie A because the slow tempo induced by the over-aged footballers is exactly what you're looking for.

CATENACCIO i.e. “SLEEPY FOOTBALL”
Every nation has its own identity in terms of the style of football they like to play. The Brazilians have Joga Bonito, the Dutch have “total football”, the Spanish have adopted the tiki-taka and even the English have their own “kick the ball and run after it” thingy. Italians have the catenaccio where a team plays four or five defenders and dig deep, determined not to let the opposition score and sometimes determined not to score themselves. Watching this makes you want to sleep and Serie A is the place to go if lullaby football is your thing.

A MONOPOLY IN TERMS OF COMPETITION, AT BEST A DUOPOLY
There are as many great clubs in Italy as any other country but in recent years, no more than one or two of them have managed to reach any consistency in terms of quality and performance over a certain period of time. Nowadays it's Juventus who are dominating, with AS Roma breathing down their necks after Napoli gave up last season. Before that, when the Milan clubs shared seven consecutive league titles between them, Juventus decided they need to fix some matches, then got caught and was relegated to the Serie B. It looks like the clubs in Serie A take turns to be on top, always managing to keep it down to a two-horse race. It's is the league you want to watch if a thrilling title race exhausts your mind.

MATCH FIXING, CRIME SYNDICATE
Other than pizza, another thing that comes to mind when speaking about Italians is the mafia. The mafia has a business interest in virtually everything Italian, including its football. Mario Balotelli was once spotted hanging out with members of the mafia while playing for AC Milan. Although there's no clear indication that the mafia had anything to do with the match fixing scandals of 2005-06, or 2011-12, or the unidentified hundreds of events before and after, we would certainly like to believe so because that would make everything so much cooler. Looking at a match trying to determine if its result are pre-determined is a fine way of working the idle grey matter in your brain. These are the sort of things only Serie A can offer.
My short lived research uprooted these amazing reasons to watch the Serie A, and I didn't even get into the fact that this league has El Shaarawy's hair, commentators with Italian accents AND the infinitely cool presence of Andrea Pirlo. At this point you're supposed to check the listings for the next matchweek. Pronto!
