Shipping minister demands immediate arrest of Khaleda

Shahjahan Khan

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan today demanded immediate arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and urged the prime minister to undertake steps in this regard for the sake of country.

“We would like to urge Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to arrest Khaleda Zia and take legal action against her for the interest of the country’s people and independence,” he said.

The death toll in political violence that spiralled since the start of this year climbed to 48 with the latest mindless arson of today in Comilla. At least 33 people among the victims dead so far were innocent without any reported ties to politics.

"We will announce such programmes that Khaleda will not get the chance to flee from the country," the minister said while speaking at a rally organised by newly floated Bangladesh Sramik-Karmachari-Peshajibi-Muktijoddha Samannay Parishad at Dhaka’s Shaheed Minar.

Demands for action against Khaleda were floated from the pro-ruling quarters for quite some time. Recently, the parliament was vibrant in this regard.

In line with such incidents, Khaleda was sued in two cases for masterminding the recent violence and for the “murder of 42” civilians.

Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council Chairman Helal Morshed Khan, former Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) chairman Abdul Malek Miah were among others who spoke at the occasion.
