Madness over rubber tires

Last year someone paid more than 3000 Taka for a rubber tired Hot Wheels in Dhaka. People fought, argued and dissolved club-built friendships over these rubber tired cars in 1:64 scale. Scalping (buying everything in sight) became a common issue at the toy stores because the lowest these cars sold for was 600 Taka.

Last couple of weeks Mustafa Mart brought in sets of Hot Wheels and a bunch of Matchbox's mainline releases at standard prices sold in rest of the world. Madness ensued. Fun, but mad. Cars sold for 310-390 taka and shelves were cleared out. Case in point was the NSX custom that people went wild looking for. Odd looking car but weighty due to the metal base and body. For once the small front and large rear wheel treatment worked because the actual NSX had that difference in wheel sizes.

The Moby Dick Porsche 935 on the other hand is a delight. Beautifully cast on an existing model, it features the new slotted wheel in red with lovely chrome rings. But the cream of the crop would be the Matchbox Miura. Most notably for the casting being super accurate painted in a dazzling bright metallic blue. The craziness has died down but if you want to see what the rubber tire fuss is all about, head out and grab what remains. Mostly the Porsches.
