'Shibir' terror continues

Islami Chhatra Shibir activists of Chittagong University, who were demanding reopening of two dormitories, allegedly vandalised a teachers' bus in nearby Chowdhury Hat area yesterday, a day after they reportedly exploded crude bombs at two rail stations.
Nobody was hurt in the attack, made around 7:30am, when the bus was headed for the port city to bring teachers to the campus, said Proctor Siraj-ud-Daula. Some windowpanes were broken, he said.
Police arrested four suspected students. “We're verifying whether they were involved in the vandalism,” said Inspector Main Uddin, in-charge of CU Police Outpost.
Under the banner of general students, Shibir men enforced an indefinite strike on Sunday, demanding reopening of Suhrawardy and Shah Amanat halls, which were declared temporarily closed on August 24 following a gunfight between Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The two dormitories are reportedly dominated by Shibir, and house more than a thousand students.
As part of their strike, Shibir men allegedly exploded eight cocktails on Monday at Sholoshahar and Chowdhury Hat rail stations between the city and CU, and set fire to rail tracks.
The proctor said all the scheduled examinations and classes were held but the presence of students on the campus was less than normal.
Amid the fear of violence, 10 policemen escorted each of the shuttle train trips, said Yasin Faruk, officer-in-charge of General Railway Police, Chittagong.
Shibir CU unit President Mostafizur Rahman said they had given moral support to the "logical demonstration of general students" but denied their activists' link to any attack or violence. “The resident students have the right to stay in dormitories,” he told The Daily Star.
Shariatullah Sharif, a resident student of Suhrawardy hall, who hails from Feni, said he was not involved in the "demonstration" but he wanted the halls to reopen soon because he and many like him were living like nomads.
