The activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, who are observing a daylong strike at Rajshahi University, vandalised a university bus and blasted at least five hand bombs today.

Shibir has enforced the strike demanding arrest of Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders who allegedly severed the ankle of their fellow on June 16, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.

No class and examination took place as the Shibir men put all the rooms of the university under lock and key, said RU Proctor Prof Tarikul Hasan.

Earlier in the morning, a chase and counter-chase took place between police and Shibir men when they brought out a procession in support of the strike, he said.

The Shibir men hurled two hand bombs targeting police from the procession, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station.

Police detained four students from the campus during the incident, the OC said.

The Shibir men vandalised a university bus at Barnali intersection in the city around 9:30am.

Earlier around 7:30am, the Shibir men exploded two hand bombs in front of the RU administrative building. They hurled a bomb on a university bus in Kazla area around 8:00am.

Sayeed Shahriar, organising secretary of Shibir RU unit, claimed that five of their activists were injured during the chase and counter-chase.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incident, said RU Prof Tarikul Hasan.

However, the university unit of BCL brought out a procession on the campus protesting the strike.

On June 16, a group of BCL men allegedly severed the right ankle of Md Russell Alam, 24, a fourth year student of Finance and Banking Department, and Shibir secretary of Nawab Abdul Latif hall unit.
