Shibir man shot dead in cop raid

An Islami Chhatra Shibir leader was shot dead and seven other activists of the organisation were bullet-hit during a police raid at a house in Satkhira town yesterday afternoon.
Aminur Rahman, 30, town unit president of the pro-Jamaat student body, died on way to Satkhira General Hospital. The injured were admitted to hospital.
Police had been tipped off that around 50-60 Shibir men were holding a meeting at one Mukul Hossain's house near Kamalnagar graveyard and planning to carry out violence.
As the law enforcers conducted a raid at the house around 5:00pm, Shibir activists exploded crude bombs targeting lawmen, Enamul Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star.
"Later, the Shibir activists opened fire, prompting us to retaliate with bullets," the OC said.
Three policemen received minor injuries in the blast. Two firearms and a bullet were recovered from the house, he added.
The injured activists, however, claimed that police had surrounded the house and shot them after blindfolding them.
Nur Mohammad, one of the bullet-hit, said six of them, including Aminur, were staying in the rented house.
"Akhter and Azizul came to the house and they were taking rest after having lunch. Suddenly, we realised that police had surrounded the house," he said.
At one stage, the law enforcers entered the house, blindfolded them and shot them, leaving Aminur dead on the spot, he said.
Of the seven injured, two were wounded by bullets in their left legs and the rest in their right knees and thighs.
Abu Syed, a doctor of the hospital, said the condition of the injured was critical and they needed to undergo surgery.
Azizur Rahman, publicity secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami's district unit, said the dead and injured were Shibir activists and police had shot them in a planned way.
Police sources said the deceased, Aminur, had five cases filed against him.
Two separate cases -- one for possessing arms and another for attacking the law enforcers -- will be filed against the injured activists, police said.
