Shibir man bites Barisal cop during scuffle

A man said to be an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir today bit the hand of a police constable, who foiled their procession in Barisal city during the Jamaat-e-Islami-sponsored countrywide daylong hartal, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.

Police said Joynal Abedin, constable of special branch of Barisal police, chased the activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Shibir, when they tried to bring out a procession in Stadium area around 7:00am.

But the activists brought out the procession ignoring the constable’s order.

As Abedin snatched a banner from the party men and tried to grab an activist, the youth took a bite on the hand of the policeman and fled the scene.

Confirming the incident, the constable told the daily that he received primary treatment for the injury.

Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shaibal Kanti Chowdhury said he heard about the incident but had no details.

The Jamaat will observe the dawn-to-dusk hartals today and tomorrow across the country, protesting the special tribunal's death sentence to its leader ATM Azharul Islam for war crimes.
