Selima wins Oslo Business for Peace Award
Selima Ahmad, vice-chairperson of Nitol-Niloy Group, has won the ‘Oslo Business for Peace’ Award this year for fostering peace and stability through creating shared value between business and society.
Selima is the second Bangladeshi to win the prestigious business award.
Earlier, leading businessman Latifur Rahman won the prestigious 2012 Oslo Business for Peace Award for maintaining commitment to social responsibility and ethical values.
This is the first time a Bangladeshi businessperson has received the prize, which is considered the most celebrated recognition in the business world. An independent committee of Nobel Prize winners in peace and economics chooses the award's recipients.
The Norwegian foundation recognised Selima and five others -- one each from Nepal, UK, USA, Tunisia and Lebanon -- for their outstanding contribution in this sector, states the foundation on its official page.
They will officially be handed over the award during the Oslo Business for Peace Summit and Award on May 15 this year in Oslo City Hall.
Selima focuses on developing entrepreneurial talent, and organising financial and marketing resources in order to enable women to overcome hurdles and expand their business beyond the micro threshold, the foundation says.
The Oslo Business for Peace Award is the highest form of recognition given to individual business leaders in this sector.
The world-wide search for the 2014 Honourees is a joint effort by the International Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Global Compact and the Oslo based Business for Peace Foundation.
