Sedition charge dropped

Police in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dropped sedition charge slapped against a group of 67 students from Jammu and Kashmir who were suspended for cheering Pakistan's win against India in the Asia Cup on March 2.
The state government informed the Indian home ministry that it had decided to drop Section 124 A (sedition) under which the minimum punishment is three years imprisonment and the maximum life sentence. However, the charges of promoting enmity between different groups and creating mischief stay.
Sedition charge against the students of the Swami Vivekananda Subharti University in Meerut had evoked sharp reactions, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir whose chief minister Omar Abdullah termed it as “an unacceptably harsh punishment that will ruin their future and further alienate them.”
What the students did was “wrong and misguided” but they didn't deserve to be slapped with sedition charge, the CM said on his micro-blogging site twitter.
