Security beefed up at Shaheed Minar

With the recent audiovisual of al-Qaeda in mind, Dhaka Metropolitan Police has beefed up security at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital and its surrounding areas ahead of International Mother Language Day on February 21.
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said this, addressing a press briefing at the DMP media centre yesterday.
Replying to a query, Benazir said there is no place for militant outfits in Bangladesh. He said they were also investigating whether any group in the country has links to al-Qaeda.
Benazir said 57 CCTV cameras and 28 security stops will be set up for security at the Shaheed Minar and its surrounding areas.
DMP will deploy plainclothes officers, patrols and striking forces besides the regular force. Women police in plainclothes, a bomb-disposal team, a dog squad, and SWAT personnel will also guard the areas.

Those going to the Shaheed Minar from New Market and  adjacent areas will have to go left at Eden College intersection and toward Jagannath Hall crossing the Palashi intersection.

However, roads from TSC to Bakshi Bazar intersection, including those going towards the Shaheed Minar, and from the VC's residence to Fuller Road intersection will be closed.
