SCB polls on March 12, 13

The two-day annual election to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for its 14 executive posts including president and secretary will be held on March 12 and 13.

A total of 4,044 lawyers of the apex court have registered as voters in the country's major bar association polls.

The executive committee of the association has fixed the schedule for its polls on February 18, SCBA’s superintendent Nimesh Chandra Das told The Daily Star today.

A seven-member committee led by Advocate Nur Hossain Chowdhury will conduct the election, he said.

Nimseh also said that submission of nomination papers by the candidates is going on, and the last date for submitting nomination papers is February 27 and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is March 3.

SCBA sources said the main contest would take place between the panels of ruling Awami League-backed Bangladesh Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (BSASP) and BNP-backed Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (BJAF).

Both the forums of lawyers would finalise their panels within few days, according to sources.

BSASP’s probable candidates for the position of president are former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru, Awami League presidium member Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury and Rabia Bhuiyan.

The lawyers who are being discussed as BJAF’s probable candidates for the post of president are--former SCBA presidents Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Zainul Abedin and former state minister for law Shahjahan Omar.
