SC upholds Bodi's bail

The Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order that granted bail to ruling Awami League lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi in a corruption case, clearing the way for his release from jail.

Chamber judge of the SC Justice Hasan Foez Siddique yesterday passed “no order” on a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, seeking a stay on the HC order that allowed Bodi six months' ad interim bail in the case on October 27.

His lawyer Abdul Matin Khasru told The Daily Star that now there is no legal bar to his client getting released from prison as the SC chamber judge did not stay the HC order.

Meanwhile, Khurshid Alam Khan, counsel for the anti-corruption watchdog, said the commission would move a leave-to-appeal petition before the SC, challenging the HC order on getting its (HC order) certified copy.

The ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station in the capital on August 21, accusing the legislator from Cox's Bazar-4 constituency of amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement.

On October 12, Bodi was sent to jail after a Dhaka court had rejected his bail petition in the graft case. He had surrendered before the court on expiry of his four-week bail granted by the HC.
