SC cancels key Ramu attacker’s bail
The Supreme Court today directed Tofail Ahmed, upazila chairman of Naikhangchhari upazila of Bandarban, to surrender before a lower court in four weeks in connection with attacking and vandalising of a Buddhist temple at Ramu in Cox's Bazar in 2012.
Tofail is the prime suspect in the Ramu incident according to a government investigation report.
The five-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the order after cancelling the bail that he secured from the High Court on March 13.
Tofail will have to surrender before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Cox's Bazar, Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul told The Daily Star.
A section of culprits allegedly led by Tofail attacked and vandalised a Buddhist temple on September 30, 2012.
According to the probe body, a meeting was held on September 28, 2012 at Tofail's residence a day before the attacks that destroyed 18 temples and 50 houses of the Buddhist community.
The law enforcers arrested Tofail on November 29 last year in a case filed with Ramu Police Station on the same day of the attack.
The government recently filed an appeal with the SC for the cancellation of his bail.
Police can arrest Tofail if he does not surrender to the lower court in four weeks, said the deputy attorney general.
