Save Buriganga from grabbing

PM asks govt departments

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take effective measures to reclaim illegally occupied parts of the Buriganga river and free it of pollution.

The orders came at a meeting organised yesterday on the recovery of all rivers around the capital, including Buriganga, and introduction of a circular road and a river route around Dhaka.

"This is our project and we will have to implement it," the PM said.

After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury briefed newsmen.

The implementation of the project will bring a positive change in the environment of Dhaka city, Hasina said. The meeting decided that the shipping ministry would launch a circular river route that would touch Ashulia, Amin Bazar, Sadarghat, Fatullah, Kanchpur and Tongi.

The Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board will construct a four-lane circular road, including Eastern bypass, around Dhaka city with the assistance of Bangladesh Army.

The Prime Minister's Office will coordinate the construction of the circular road.

With the introduction of the circular road and river route, transportation of people and goods will improve.
