Satkhira Jamaat man dies in 'cop firing'

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was killed when police opened fire after coming under an attack by the party men in Debhata upazila of Satkhira early today.

The deceased is Sirajul Islam, 45, of Chiledanga village in the upazila, reports our Satkhira correspondent.

A vegetable trader, Sirajul had an involvement with Jamaat politics, said Kazi Jalaluddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station quoting the family members.

The victim’s family however claimed that Sirajul was picked up from their residence Monday evening.

The OC said police conducted a drive at Kewratola around 4:00am after getting information that Sirajul was holding a clandestine meeting with the party activists to carry out subversive activists in the district.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the Jamaat men hurled at least five cocktails targeting the police personnel, prompting them to retaliate with bullets.

When all the activists fled the scene, police found bullet-hit Sirajul lying on the ground, the OC said.

Sirajul was declared “brought dead” when he was rushed to Debhata Upazila Health Complex, he said.

Two police also sustained minor injuries during the clash.

Police recovered a shutter gun and three unexploded from the scene.

Sirajul was accused in three cases including a murder case, the OC said.
