Satkhira Jamaat man beaten dead

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was beaten to death by a mob in Debhata upazila of Satkhira last night.

The deceased was identified as Akhtar Hossain alias Aku, 46, son of Bazle Rahman of Kulia village in the upazila, reports our Satkhira correspondent.

Aku was an accused in three cases including local Awami League activist Abu Raihan murder case, said Kazi Zamal Uddin officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station.

Raihan was hacked to death by the Jamaat-Shibir activists on November 21 last year.

A group of villagers numbering 20 to 30 led by Shahidulla Gazi, cousin of Abu Raihan, started beating Aku as he was coming out of a mosque after Esha prayers at Chandpur intersection around 8:30pm, said Mukter Ali, younger brother of Aku.

Later, the mob took him to Shakhipur area where they again gave him a beating, leaving him critically injured, Mukter said, adding that they did not know his whereabouts after 11:00pm.

Devhata Upazila Chairman Abdul Ghani said a group of people led by Shahidulla Gazi took Aku as he came out of a mosque at Chandpur after Esha prayers on Friday night. They also slapped Aku, Ghani said, adding that he learnt in the morning that Aku died from mob beating.

Shahidulla Gazi said he learnt yesterday morning that the agitated people had killed Aku. He added that Aku had a role in killing his brother Raihan.

Kazi Jamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station, said on information, police rescued the Jamaat man and sent him to Debhata Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead around 11:30pm.

Mukter said they heard about the death of his brother in the morning and that the body was been kept on the police station compound.
