RU Shibir leader’s leg cut off

RU Shibir leader’s leg cut off

Shibir calls half-day hartal in Rajshahi, Natore, Chapainawabganj districts

An Islami Chhatra Shibir leader’s leg was cut off by miscreants at Rajshahi University this afternoon.

Shibir blamed the Bangladesh Chhatra League men for the incident while the BCL denied the allegations.

Russel Alam, 24, is a fourth year finance and banking student and Shibir’s general secretary of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall unit at the RU.

Protesting the attack, Shibir called a half-day hartal in Rajshahi, Natore and Chapainawabganj districts on Tuesday. The eight-hour strike will start at 6:00am, said a press statement issued by RU unit of Shibir.

Tanvir Haidar Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said a group of miscreants severed the right leg of the Shibir leader around 4:15pm after taking him inside the Shahidullah Kala Bhaban on the campus.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of BCL activists led by its RU unit general secretary SM Tawhid Al Hossain caught Russel in front of the Kala Bhaban around 1:00pm and took him inside the building, reports our RU correspondent.

After cutting the leg, the BCL men fired two rounds of bullets at Russel, leaving him in critical condition, the witnesses added.

On information, police rescued Russel and sent him to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.

Shoyeb Shahriar, RU organising secretary of Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, accused the BCL men for the incident.

“The attack has been launched on the Shibir leader by BCL men headed by its RU general secretary in presence of police in a bid to root out Shibir’s politics from the campus,” he added.

Mizanur Rahman Rana, RU president of the BCL, the ruling party backed student body, denied the allegation saying “No BCL leaders and activists were involved in the attack.”

Additional law enforcers have been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident.

Shortly after the incident, Shibir leaders and activists brought out protest processions at different points of the Rajshahi city including Saheb Bazar, New Market and court areas. They burn tyres on the streets during the demonstrations.

Police dispersed the protesters and brought the situation under control in a short time.

Locals said the Shibir men also attempted to stage demonstrations at Binodpur and other areas adjacent to the RU campus.
