Classes and examinations were not held at Rajshahi University today due to an indefinite strike enforced by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student front of the ruling Awami League, following a killing incident on the campus yesterday.

"No classes and examinations are being held as the BCL men are carrying out strike on the campus demanding immediate arrest of those who killed Rustam Ali Akanda," said Prof Tariqul Hasan, proctor of the university.

Akanda, a fourth-year student of political science department of the university, was shot dead when he was sleeping in his room of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall yesterday.

BCL leaders announced the strike for an indefinite period protesting the killing.

The university authorities will sit with the BCL leaders immediately in the interest of the smooth operation of all kinds of academic activities, the proctor told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, the BCL leaders and activists brought out silent processions this morning demanding immediate arrest of the killers which marched different streets on the campus.

"We are carrying out strike demanding immediate measures to arrest of the mastermind behind the killing and ban politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir on the campus," said Mizanur Rahman Rana, president of BCL RU unit.

“Students have voluntarily abstained from taking part in the classes and examinations expressing solidarity with our demand," he added.

Nobody was arrested till filing of the report around 12:30pm.
