Rohingya man killed in ‘gunfight’ with BGB in Bandarban

A Rohingya man suspected to be a yaba trader, was killed in a "gunfight" with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban early today.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ibrahim (30), son of Syed Alam, resident of Kutupalong Lambashia Rohingya camp in Ukhia, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent quoting Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, commanding officer (CO) of BGB 34 battalion.

BGB men also recovered 80,000 pieces of yaba pills, one hand-made pipe gun, and two fresh cartridges from the scene.

The alleged gunfight took place at Aambagan area adjacent to Baishfari border around 12:30am, said the BGB official.

A BGB patrol team took position at Aambagan area adjacent to Baishfari border on information that a consignment of yaba pills will be smuggled to Bangladesh through this path, said the BGB official.

When the BGB men challenged a group consisting of 5-6 people, they opened fire at the BGB personnel, prompting retaliation and triggering a gunfight, he added.

At one point, the men fled the scene. Later, the BGB team found a body on the spot which was taken to Cox's Bazar Zila Hospital for autopsy, he informed.

Process of filing a case in this connection is underway.
