Rohingya boat capsize death toll rises to 14

The death toll in last night's incident of boat capsize in the Naf River has reached 14 persons today, all fleeing Rohingya refugees.

The bodies were of 11 children, two women and a man, Md Mainuddin Khan, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, told our local correspondent.

Due to rough weather, the overcrowded boat sank near Shah Porir Dwip area around 9:30pm, the OC said. As search continues for more bodies, fears are on that the death toll may rise.

Eleven bodies were recovered in the morning from Gholar Char area near Shah Parir Dwip jetty while another was recovered from Teknaf beach around 3:00pm, he said.

Earlier last night, two Rohingyas died and 18 others went missing in the boat capsize.

A total of 143 Rohingya people, who were fleeing into Bangladesh from Rakhine State, died in several incidents of boat capsize in Bay so far, the OC added.
