EC employee, 4 others sued in Chattogram for 'issuing fake NID to Rohingyas'

The Election Commission today filed a case against five people, including an official of its regional office in Chattogram, for their alleged connection in issuing National Identification Cards (NIDs) to Rohingya refugees.

Pallabi Chakma, officer of the port city's election office, filed the case under the Digital Security Act this morning, Mohammad Mahsin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, told our staff correspondent.

The case was transferred to the Counter Terrorism (CT) unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), the police official added.

Three of the arrestees are: Md Jainal Abedin, 35, office assistant of Chattogram Regional Election Office, Bijoy Das, a diver by profession and his sister Sima Das. All are residents of Patiya upazila, said Deputy Director of Election Commission (NID) Iqbal Hossain.

"After getting information of recovering a missing laptop belonging to the EC, a team of police rushed to the regional election office around 10:30pm yesterday and made the arrests," said OC Mohammad Mohsin.

Police are trying to arrest two other accused -- Sagar and Sotto Sudur Dey.

A three-member team of the Election Commission led by Iqbal Hossain has been conducting drives in various places of Cox's Bazar and Chattogram as part of their crackdown on the allegation of issuing fake NIDs to Rohingya refugees.
