5 Rohingyas jailed for selling mobile, SIMs

Five Rohingyas were jailed today by a Rab mobile court for setting up shops in Cox's Bazar and selling mobile phones and SIM cards to Rohingya refugees, who have fled military persecution in Myanmar.

A Rab mobile court headed by an executive magistrate conducted the drive this evening and sealed off their four illegal shops near Kutupalong Rohingya camp, Cox's Bazar Company Commander of Rab 7 Major Mohammad Ruhul Amin told our staff correspondent.

The court also handed down jail term of six months to each of them, he said adding that a number of SIMs and mobile phones were also seized during the drive.

Earlier on September 23, the government warned all the mobile operators of legal action if they are caught selling SIM cards to Rohingya refugees, who do not have legal identity cards.

However, the government is also working out a process to sell SIM cards to the Rohingyas.
