'Robber' killed in Bagerhat 'shootout'

An alleged robber was killed in a 'shootout' with Rapid Action Battalion in Chandpai range of Sundarbans in Bagerhat this morning.

Deceased Nasir alias Russell, 29, was the leader of a robbery gang, locally known as Nasir Bahini, said Hasibul Haque, operation officer of Rab-8.

Nasir and his gang opened fire on a team of Rab-8 when the elite force members were patrolling Harbaria point on the bank of Pashur river around 6:00am, the official said.

In retaliation, the Rab members also fired at the robbers, triggering a 30-minute gunfight.

Rab members recovered the bullet-hit body of Nasir when his cohorts managed to flee the scene, he added.

The Rab personnel also recovered six firearms and 169 bullets and five sharp weapons from the spot.
