Traffic movement on Mirpur Road of the capital remained suspended for nearly one hour following a clash between the apparel workers and law enforcers today over payment of dues.

No injury was reported from the clash.

The agitating workers also vandalised four to five vehicles on the busy road during the clash.

The vehicular movement on the road however came to normalcy around 11:00am as police dispersed the agitators by lobbying teargas canisters.

The clash is a consequence of a demonstration brewed from dissatisfaction of the workers as the authorities of Softex Garment Factory declared their unit closed for indefinite period without clearing the dues of the workers, said Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station.

The factory was closed citing shabby condition of the building, the OC said.

The agitation erupted around 9:00am when the workers came to their factory and saw the closure notice, the OC added.

Later around 10:00am, the workers took to the street in front of their factory at section-11 to section-12 in Mirpur, halting the traffic movement.

As the news of agitation spread, the authorities of several other garment factories in the area suspended their production for today to avert possible violence.

Being informed, police swung into actions and charged batons, triggering a chase and counter-chase.
